Every couple of months, we set the non-fiction aside and read a bit of literature. For March, we will read The Book of Sand and Shakespeare?s Memory by Jorge Luis Borges. Borges has been called the greatest Spanish-language writer of the twentieth century. One of Borges? characteristics, acutely present in this slim volume, is his constant mixing up of reality with fantasy, of different epochs, and of true and imaginary identities. Borges wants us to look beyond the artifices of our lives, beyond the linguistic, economic, political and religious restrictions we have given ourselves, and see the world for what it actually is. This mature collection is a strong sample of Borges's best qualities: concision, brevity, high-octane imagination, and philosophy without pretentiousness. Perhaps because these were Borges' last stories, there's a reflective, introspective feeling to many of them. Borges seems to be glancing back at his life, and ahead to his death. But he doesn't lose his touch for the haunting feeling that the unnameable is just a misstep away.
