Good Company: Poetry as a path to wholehearted living

Poetry is a container large enough to hold the entirety of our human experience and small enough to fit in our pocket.

During this session, Ríonach will show you how to use powerful poems as guides to living a more expanded and wholehearted life. Inspirational poetry is a rich resource that can open your heart, shift your perception, inspire you into action, restore your faith and express your deepest truth.

Recent brain research has demonstrated that good poetry has the power to surprise, to disrupt conventional habits of thought and feeling, triggering deeper feeling and reflective states. Poetry, like music, opens us to our emotions and speaks an inner language that awakens us to our own experience, renewing our senses, our compassion, our love of life.

Spending quality time with poems that we love is a healing force, a kind of medicine for what ails us. Poetry, both modern and ancient, offers a wide range of prescriptions in a huge variety of doses: poems to stir us up or calm us down, poems for grief and longing, love and break-ups, alienation and homecoming, poems for fear, courage, depression, elation, letting go, starting over, being quiet and speaking out.

During this session you will:

• Discover a wealth of inspirational poems that can open your heart and guide you through many challenges.

• Understand how each poem carries a unique medicine to heal some aspect of the human condition.

• Learn how to choose a companion poem and work with it to create real shifts in your life.

• Use poetry to connect more deeply with yourself and others.

• Be given poetry cards to work with and a list of companion poems for wholehearted living.

I didn't trust it for a moment
but I drank it anyway,
the wine of my own poetry.

It gave me the daring to take hold
of the darkness and tear it down
and cut it into little pieces.

Lala, 14th century Indian poet

It was lovely to meet such a great group of women. What an Amazing session. Thank you Rionach for leading a great session, and introducing to me a new way of looking at poetry. Where it doesnt matter if you understand the whole poem, what matters is its significance to you. I love the idea of an almost intuitive selection of a poem and response too it. It was great to have a chance to choose a poem and to share this in such a supportive group.

Excellent presentation by Rionach. Very inspiring and great to find out about poetry and how it can be used as a catalyst for change and motivation in such a nourishing way. Mind blowing and just the sort of discussion I was hoping for only much better! Thanks to everyone who was there for my inaugural meetup. Lovely mixture of age and backgrounds added to the richness of discussion.

Really enjoyed last night and found myself connecting to poetry in ways that I did not realise I could. The message on the poem I picked was just perfect and timely. Thank you Rionach for sharing your passion for poetry and bringing out the passion in all of us.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
