Kent Island, MD Circumnavigation by Kayak

Kent Island Circumnavigation - UltraMarathon Warmup

This year's River Connection Race Team schedule includes an ambitious race hosted by Watertribe.org and CLCBoats.com.

May 18th, 2014 OkumeFest UltraMarathon

Watertribe OkumeFest

The Race Course is @64 miles in length and competitors use a number of classes of craft.

As a first full day paddle of the year I'll be leading a trip around the Kent Island portion of the course starting/finishing at the Chesapeake Bay Center launching at 7am and finishing around sundown for a total distance of approximately 34 nautical miles

If you would like to follow along MotionX GPS updates and some photos will be posted on the hour throughout the day here.

For the day of the races I'll be viewable on the Watertribe tracker map under SeaDawg.

Requirements:
Any paddlers attending must have a sea kayak of 16'+ with fore/aft floatation in the way of bulkheads/floatation bags, PFD, proper immersion wear (wetsuit/drysuit), the ability to keep a 4 mph pace all day, full compliment of personal food/drink to keep fueled throughout the day, full equipment kit including self rescue gear/skills, night time lighting, changes of clothes, unplanned overnight gear kit.

Once underway we are paddling with the tides with no shortcuts back to the launch regardless of conditions (unless they become an extreme hazard)

Launch time is 7am. Meet earlier to prep gear.

3/13/14  NOAA Weather Forecast

"Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph."

Heck of a lot better than the current 20 degrees and 20mph West winds now.

See you on the water,

This trip is similar in distance to paddling around Manhattan but with far more places to pull off for breaks, less emphatic currents & more birding.

Can you please spread the word about One Square Mile of Hope.

All kayaks, canoes, anything that floats are welcome to this event for the benefit of breast cancer. The link below tells a bit of the history of how Inlet, NY got into the Guinness Book, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated. (Yes, you too can tell people you appeared in Sports Illustrated in a swim suit).

I did this in Sept 2011 and will be there this September.
