I help mentor a FIRST Robotics team at a local high school here in
Temecula (we have 3 FRC teams just in our local area).
If you are not familiar with the FIRST FRC teams, it's a US-based
world wide volunteer organization started by Dean Kamen (the inventor
of the Segway).
We partner up local industry (engineers, business, graphic artists,
etc.) with a local high school team of students who are interested in
studying in technology (STEM) in the future.
Over 2500 high school teams compete world-wide each year culminating
in an annual Championship event in April. The students (and their
mentors) have to learn a new game each year, then design, build, test,
and field a new robot within 6 weeks time.
Check out this year's game - Ultimate Ascent:
We just had our kick-off and we are recruiting mentors to help working
with our students. Our team's students are also learning to run to
their team as a business (fund-raising, grants, etc.) and also to lead
their own team as well. We are always learning, performing outreach,
recruiting more mentors, and recruiting more sponsors.
Let me know if anyone are interested.
