Know your kiln - approaching a new (or used) kiln and make test tiles.

Know your kiln. Really what does this mean? Everyone says here is my schedule but we know not to follow it blindly but you have to know your kiln. How am I suppose to do that without spending or losing a lot of glass/money/time???

I would like to get together and talk about knowing your kiln and make a few test tiles. I just got a new little paragon 7 kiln and am in process of trying to find the full fusing temperature. In mentioning to people about this, several thought a meetup might be helpful.

I thought we could meet at someone's house who has not fired their kiln yet learn how to approach a new kiln and maybe do a pre-fire as well as make test tiles. If no one volunteers their kiln/home we can meet at my house and look at 4 different types of kilns and 2 different types of programmable controllers.

I would love anyone who would like to add to this meetup to contact me prior to meetup, so we provide as much info as possible (email me: [masked]). I am not the expert but have been firing for a few years and think this might be good for newbies as well as review for us more experienced people in the group.

Also I am totally open to changing dates, so just making a suggestion but am out of town from mid-May till @June 2.

See you soon I hope!

I need this. I have had a kiln since Nov 2011 and am afraid to plug in. Have spent too much on tools and glass to not use. Would love to have encouraging support. Please include me.

Too far for me to drive--sorry. I'd have liked to learn about dealing with a kiln.

I only been to studio in another city. I used their kilns, since I wanted to make sure I saw enough to do it right at home. :-)

ps.. remember this is a meetup not a class. The focus of this meetup is to discuss using a kiln, and participants should have basic understandings of fused glass. Thanks.

Hi everyone! I think someone contacted me about doing the meetup at their house so we can fire up their kiln. But I am not sure I have that info... So who would like to host? Otherwise you can come here to my dusty garage :-)
    Thanks!

p.s. we will go over what to do for test tiles...

I'd like to attend but it might depend on where it's held. I'm in El Dorado Hills and might not be able to get to Sacramento this day.

This is a great idea for a Class! Understanding your kiln is one of the most confusing things about working with glass.

I have been looking at restarting kiln work for dichoric glass art and jewlery related projects.
