My husband and I are interested in attending this DBT class on Saturday. Is it appropriate to bring my 15 year old daughter? She has been struggling with anxiety and depression and these exercises could be very beneficial to her.

Am I correct in thinking that there will not be a 10:00 am meeting? I look forward to going at 7:00 pm but just want to make sure that there would not be two meetings that day. Thank you.

I am always happy to learn new ways of coping. It also sounds like another great way for like minded people to socialize.

Okay. I give, what is DBT?

    2 · March 9, 2015

    • Anna

This is what I found.(DBT) is a therapy designed to help people change patterns of behavior that are not effective, such as self-harm, suicidal thinking, and substance abuse.[1] This approach works towards helping people increase their emotional and cognitive regulation by learning about the triggers that lead to reactive states and helping to assess which coping skills to apply in the sequence of events, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to help avoid undesired reactions. DBT assumes that people are doing the best they can but are either lacking the skills or influenced by positive or negative reinforcement that interfere with their ability to function appropriately.

Okay! It's obvious that there is a real call for this DBT class. So, I am willing to do a FREE DBT class. We can get together, discuss what DBT is and whether it is something that would be right for you and if so I will consider doing an on-going free class. I want to emphasize that this would be a CLASS, not group therapy. So I would be teaching skills on emotional regulation, appropriate communication and social skills.
My question to you is, what days and times would work best for you. It would likely be at either 7:45pm on a week day or on a Saturday morning around 10am.
Just a heads up, if I do not receive a comment from you in response to this post, I will assume you are not interested. If there are not enough people that respond to this, then it will not happen.

Thanks for your interest and persistence

I hate to sound stupid but what is DBT?

    June 4, 2014

    • Frank C.

Hi Karen. I explain it it my comment from exactly one year ago today (6/6/2013) but here is an excerpt: "Just to give you some background on DBT - it stands for Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. It was originally developed (by Marsha Linehan) to cope with the difficulties that come with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. But people who struggle with emotional regulation and getting along with others have benefited." Thanks for your interest. It's definitely not a stupid question

We can do anything we set our minds to. Combined minds with the same goal, will result in a very positive result :)

Am more interested in doing the actual exercises from DBT than understanding the deeper bones of it.... and there is a depth of info about it. Am sad to think that you might have to give up another Sat. morning with family to do this...... ????????

Is this focused on dealing with people with high-conflict personalities or is it for people who have been diagnosed as borderline?

    June 16, 2013

I don't necessarily think a formal diagnosis of borderline would be necessary.....

I have done a bit of dbt group work, one on one, and use it in my own practice. I enjoy that as well as positive psychology & would love to meet others, particularly any other counselors ( social workers, student affairs, parents -ha- state emps) who are intrested in discussion or practice. love this subject matter!!! I am willing to help coordinate this meet-up!!!

How many sessions or is it $40 for one group therapy sessions?

    June 6, 2013

    • Frank C.

Yeah, it would be $40 per group therapy session of an hour and a half

      June 11, 2013

  • Frank C.

Okay.... first of all, let me say that I did not initiate this MeetUp and I wasn't consulted at all. I honestly don't even know how it got onto my page. That said, it seems like there are a number of people interested in a DBT group. Just to give you some background on DBT - it stands for Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. It was originally developed (by Marsha Linehan) to cope with the difficulties that come with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. But people who struggle with emotional regulation and getting along with others have benefited. I would be willing to facilitate such a group but it would actually be a real group - as in group therapy and there would be a charge for it - probably $40 per group (some insurance are willing to pay). As a licensed therapist I am qualified to do it. If you're still interested in such a group, let me know along with which evenings would (or would not) work for you. Groups would probably start around 7:30pm and go to 9pm

DBT = Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. For more info, go to Wikipedia, search "Dialectical Behavior Therapy".

Again, huge fan of DBT + positive psychology. See my below post, and if anyone is interested in formulating a meet-up group focusing on these skills topics (you do not have to be an expert - I am not, just a novice) please be in touch!.
