Saturday Volunteer Day at Family House - 6 Volunteers

Every second Saturday of the month (this month it's actually the third Saturday), Family House hosts a Saturday Volunteer Day from 10am to 1pm at[masked]th Avenue in the Inner Sunset. This is the perfect opportunity for volunteers with limited schedules to work in a group setting on projects around the house. Project may include, but are not limited to, organizing and disinfecting communal areas, sorting donations, tending gardens, and hosting activities for our families. In the past we've participated in activities such as cleaning the couches, organizing the kitchens, painting doors, and making signs for some residents that got to go to a Giants game! Be sure to dress comfortably and wear clothing that can get dirty.

Afterward, we'll go grab lunch somewhere close by!

If you plan on coming, try to bring one of the following items that Family House is always in need of:

  • Full size shampoo, conditioner, hairbrushes and combs
  • Hair products and shaving cream
  • Children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash and floss
  • Sanitary napkins and tampons
  • Full size hand and body lotion
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen
  • Diapers
  • Diaper rash ointment, baby lotion and baby powder
  • Children's Tylenol and Aspirin
  • Gift cards: Safeway, Lucky's, Walgreens, gas cards and phone cards
  • Non-Perishable Food: canned food, breakfast bars, juice boxes, etc.

Family House Mission Statement

Family House is to serve as a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses by providing physical comfort and emotional support, free from financial concerns.

Our History: What We Do

Founded in 1981, Family House is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital. Qualifying families live more than 50 miles from UCSF, and many live at or below the low-income status as determined by UCSF. Our two locations sustain nearly a 100% occupancy rate and can accommodate 107 people per night. Over the course of a year we serve more than 2,000 families.

Family House is an independent organization led by a professional staff and board of directors dedicated to providing residential services free-of-charge to qualifying families. Since we receive no financial support from UCSF, or any other public entity, we rely solely on the generous contributions of individuals, corporations and foundations.

Working with the Department of Pediatric Oncology at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital

Working in conjunction with University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital, we strive to provide family-centered care for patient families. Pediatric social workers refer all patient families to Family House. While children undergoing bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, and radiation are our most common guests, we also accommodate those facing other life-threatening childhood illness such as fetal surgery, transplants, and cardiac patients when space is available.

The Future of Family House

As Family House looks to the future, we hope to continue serving the pediatric patient population when UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital moves to the Mission Bay area of San Francisco. The area is being redeveloped from the ground up, which means Family House must acquire a piece of land and construct a new building in the vicinity of the hospital to fulfill our mission. Plans are under way to ensure that families will receive the same care, comfort and compassionate housing completely free of charge while their child receives care at the new hospital.
