Re: [itgreyhound-198] Meetup details changed: Meet and greet Like I said, you can lead a horse to water... LOL!!!  Emily, your brilliance is absolutely DAZZLING.  I never even considered the difficulty of scooping up a little dog in a hurry!  I am so happy that there is a product that makes this easier!!!  It’s especially refreshing to learn experience means nothing! Yippee!  Thank you so much!  I can now no longer feel guilty for not showing up at Meet Ups!

WOW sounds like in your opinion no-one other than you knows anything about IGs.? Quite condescending...

FYI the harnesses you think people use at the meetups are not harnesses.? They are yapwraps and intended for scooping the little guys up in a hurry if need be.? They are amazing.

You didn't mention seat belts, diet,? luxating patellas...

No, this was meant for the group, I’m not even sure I know who you are! ?Did you noticed that I put a “wink” at the end of that sentence? I did that because I know that there are a oodles of people who really don’t know any better. ?I also hoped that some group members would be curious enough to actually read the definative book on IGs... or check out the Italian Greyhound Club of America’s website for breed specific info. ?

I believe that it’s impossible for an IG to escape from a martingale unless it is improperly sized or the handler doesn’t have the slide down AND isn’t paying attention to their dog. ?Dogs do not understand signals you might be trying to send to them from their chests or armpits. I’ve been in this breed since 1984. ?I’ve been a dog trainer/behaviorist for over 25 years. At one point I had 22 IG come though my home within a 2 year time period. ?Many were fearful basket cases that had to be re-habbed before placement. Old timers like myself and Vikki keep in touch with newbies out of our love for the breed and a desire to educate. ?In the last 20 years we have seen a huge explosion of interest in IGs which has also contributed to a huge explosion of IGs coming into rescue. ?

I don’t want to sound heartless or mean but your dog’s confidence levels would improve more quickly with a greater understanding of dog psychology and learning effective communication techniques. ?Here is the thing: ?IG Rescue was started by IG breeders. ?IGs are considered a breed for experienced dog people. It’s a fact that IGs have become overly popular and most purebred rescue group volunteers are big hearted, well meaning, but breed-specific-inexperienced people. ?Now we have play groups all over the place being run by people who present themselves as breed experts or are presumed to be experts, when they are not. ?Product/merchandising experts are not species experts (nor should they consider breeding their poorly bred pets, which a lot of people do consider absolutely NUTTY). Any experienced IG person would feel absolutely compelled to help a newbie train their IG to walk on a martingale, NOT sell you a harness.

Please understand that it’s incredibly frustrating to have knowledge to share and find that it’s unwanted. ?Especially when we know that we will hear more horror stories of IGs needlessly breaking legs, getting systemic poisoning from negligent oral care, getting hit by cars, etc. ?It is also a fact the the dogs coming into rescue are usually the result of poor education in the first place. Early on I offered to do free teeth and nail clinics at this Meet up group and was never taken up on it by the organizer. ?You can lead a horse to water...

Of course it’s a free world and there is no law that says pet owners have to learn all they can about the needs of their breed. ?

If this was meant for me, I wish you wouldn't pass judgement - I rescued 2 dogs that had come from difficult situations. ?One of my IGs has a harness because he is easily scared and can get out of the martingale collar- probably how he escaped from his abusive home. ?He had a bruise around his neck when we adopted him into our home and continues to become more confident as ?the months pass.

Well said Vikki. ?Most novice IG people aren’t aware of the more stringent dog proofing that experienced IG people are into. ?At least until they have to pay for a broken leg to be plated. ?I only went once but wouldn’t let my IG run off lead because there were rose bushes covered with thorns (and believe me, tear wounds on an IG do NOT heal easily). ?

Personally, I don’t tend to trust the opinion of anyone on IG matters who can’t train their IG to walk nicely on a martingale collar and lead. ;-) ?As Lilian Barber wrote, in the definitive book on IG’s: ?Harnesses are a sign of amateur dog ownership/

Back to the original question: ?What is the $5 charge for the SF Meet Up group for? ?I understand small donations for rescue and web/database operation costs but what cost is there to the meet up groups? ?Especially if you are meeting in a public park? ?I guess another question I wonder about is: was this meet up group sold to the new organizers? ?Didn’t Irene have a pet boutique too? ?Not that there’s anything wrong with that, tee, hee.

That was a private e-mail and shouldn't have gone out to the list, but too late I realized that send button was not directly to my friend.
?
But I'll stand by my and most folks' opinion. ?She is a total nut and the yard is not iggy safe. ?She has zero idea on what an ig is and what is safe.
?
But I didn't mean to offend and send it out publicly and for that I am sorry.

Hi Tia!
?
?
?
How's life up there???
?
?
?
I don't have anything to do with this group, they are a takeoff of ?the other meetup group in SF that was run by the nut and had the unsafe ?yard and chairs.
?
?
?
However SF Bay Iggies, my group, started by Charlie was never to do ?with Rescue and we always charged a $3 per family fee, mostly to pay for ?prizes or contests or whatever we were doing at the time. ?Later on I ?started having Barb come and do a Rescue table to sell things for rescue ?and bring pups that were adoptable. ?Sometimes I would give her a ?donation from the jar, but only if I felt like it. ?Sometimes we both ?made a little. ?But she does get plenty of donations while we have ?the playdates from our members who support rescue. ?And many of the ?members came from her list, at least some of the newer ones.
?
?
?
But the playdate is a separate entity from Rescue, sometimes Rescue ?hosts their own playdates from their own list though.
