Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

Join us to discuss this novel set in San Francisco and written by Robin Sloan.  We will have our regular book discussion Thursday at 7PM.

** Ulysses readers, we will meet around 6-6:30 to discuss it.

The book selected for August was one of Heidi's recommendations:  The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Japanese author  Haruki Murakami

Really enjoy our meeting tonight! Hope to see you again for Mr. Penumbra's! :)

San Francisco Chronicle
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything—instead, they “check out” large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele’s behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore’s secrets extend far beyond its walls. Rendered with irresistible brio and dazzling intelligence, Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore
is exactly what it sounds like: an establishment you have to enter and will never want to leave.

I mentioned playing that werewolf game. Here's the promised event — I spoke to the organizer (and exec of the company providing the facility), and he said not to worry about RSVPing or the limit on the number of attendees.

And here's a link to the Wired magazine article on the phenomena of the game:

I'd like to pitch a different location — Thirsty Bear Brewing Company.

They're at 661 Howard, just beyond SFMOMA; they have a huge place and the hostess is good about directing people to their group (a backpacking meetup I'm in did a meet-and-greet there recently). They've got a nice menu, brew a very nice selection of reasonably-priced beers, and have a full bar (stocked much, much better than Fuzio's).

    Check it out?

Hi Richard, I would like to see this place, but am running really behind today. Was actually wondering WHERE the group was meeting tonite, TBBC or Fuzio's. So it must be Fuzio's if you guys haven't already checked TBBC out. Will be at Fuzio's as close to 7 as I can. See eveyone then!

      Yeah. I'm sure we're at Fuzio's.

At TTBC, I'm at a table along the wall opp. the bar.

I will also be in Greece on a beach or a taverna. But, looking forward to mind-bending discussions on our return!

As much as I enjoyed to book, I'm envious :-)

Very sorry to miss this. I am going to be in Greece. I will be visiting another branch of the Bookstore owned by Mr. Penumbrakis. Oh wait, it's not a bookstore but a tavern. Anyway, same difference, as they say in America.
