Novels, short stories, poetry
Toni Morrison--she creates great characters and tells great stories. Books like Sula and Song of Solomon create their own contemporary myths while playing with allusions to Faulkner and Greek mythology
Song of Solomon (amazing coming of age fable with elements of magic realism- though Morrison doesn't like to be associated with the term); Great Gatsby (I'm a sucker for gorgeous lyricism); The Grapes of Wrath (I love the voices of Steinbeck's characters)
Their Eyes Were Watching God
I teach English, and love literature, especially American literature, and poetry.
