Software Re-Engineering Best Practices

Microsoft Office (map)

Selected By: Don Robins

This presentation will focus on Best Practices in Software Re-engineering, and will briefly review the business case for re-engineering as opposed to rebuilding. It will include an in depth discussion of technical best practices for quality injection and re-engineering of an existing system.

Re-engineering an existing system is more cost effective than a complete rewrite for several reasons. Some estimates say a 30% savings can be realized over the cost of building the system from scratch. However, re-engineering a system to update the architecture and inject current testing and structure methodologies requires a different approach. The new infrastructure must be put in place in such a way that the system is continually available and no new bugs are introduced in the process, while allowing both old and new code to benefit from the updated architecture.

Brad Irby is the President and CTO of Alobria Systems, a software development firm that builds Enterprise Microsoft Solutions. Brad has been a developer since 1989, and specializes in re-engineering of large enterprise systems. You can find his personal bio on LinkedIn here:
