Revenue Buzz for 2011, RDFa, SEO and LOD - Don't miss the wave!
The Semantic web is now mainstream. If you did your holiday shopping on the web, odds are you were using Semantic Web technology.
Of late, Linked Open Commerce (LOC) has been an amazing addition to the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud. Companies like Overstock, BestBuy, Tesco and many others are using RDFa and microformats in their webpages to optimize search. Other companies are choosing to make their "metadata" (almost becoming a misnomer as it can be very specific) about their product catalogs available via downloadable RDF files. This development is primarily driven by Search Engine Optimization (SEO) considerations, however, there is a great opportunity to use this recently available metadata for new types of services.
Clearly, e-commerce is not the only domain. Scientific journals such as PLoS, (and many others) publish information with RDFa and there are many vertical markets leveraging the technology.
In this presentation, Barbara will discuss microformats and RDFa, the pattern of their adoption with major industry players (such as Google, Bing, and Facebook), and how it relates to the LOD and LOC cloud as well as thoughts around applications one could build with the new exploding metadata sets.
Jans Aasman from Franz Inc. will demonstrate several new tools that enable and facilitate the end-user’s ability to easily leverage this emerging Semantic Web wave. These tools allow easy capture of RDFa from websites and provide an easy on-ramp for non-technical users to engage the Semantic Web. Jans will show how a user can scrape and download LOD, LOC and RDFa from websites to combine into a triplestore. He will demonstrate how a user can visualize microformat and RDFa web page data and how to perform queries over this data using a Visual Query Builder for SPARQL.
