The purpose of San Francisco Walking Dykes group is: to build community for lesbians in San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area while promoting health and wellness. Walking together provides a relaxed way to meet one another and also have fun while doing something healthy! Lesbians of all ages and walking ability are invited, though most members of the group are over 40. The group meets "rain or shine" so the size of the group varies from week to week depending upon the weather, though generally, between 10-20 walkers show up each time. Children who can walk with adults or are in strollers are welcome. Dogs are welcome too! The purpose of the group is to promote positive social activities for lesbians in San Francisco, however, lesbians from everywhere are welcome to walk with us! The group organizer is there every week with few exceptions.
Time: Saturdays at 11:00 AM
Meeting Place: The Conservatory of Flowers In Golden Gate Park (main entrance at the top of the stairs). Golden Gate Park is well known, easy to find and provides many beautiful paths and places to walk throughout the year. It is accessible for those who drive and for those who use public transportation. There are several public bathrooms and places to get water and beverages.
First Saturday of each month: Stow Lake Walk/Strawberry Hill. Approximately 2 hours. Lunch afterward is optional.
Second Saturday of each month: The AIDS Memorial Grove/Botanical Garden Walk. This walk is free for SF residents (with ID) and costs $7 for non-SF residents. Generally, the group pitches in to pay for non-SF residents who drive a ways to walk with us. No dogs permitted on this walk (park rules). Approximately 1.5 hours. Lunch afterward is optional.
Third Saturday of each month: Stow Lake Walk/Strawberry Hill. Approximately 2 hours. Lunch afterward is optional.
Fourth Saturday of each month: Beach Walk. This is a longer walk (6.5 miles). Approximately 4 hours. Lunch is generally "bring your own" and in the middle of the walk.
Fifth Saturday of each month: Wild-Card Walk. Walks are a “surprise” and are different from the above selections.
Ability: The women who show up define the walk (pace, endurance, etc.). In other words, the group defines the walk and not the other way around. So, you don't need to be able to hike for several hours (although it's fine if you can) or climb steep hills. You just need to be able to walk with us at a reasonable pace. Walks will be modified for persons in electric wheelchairs.
Weather Conditions and Meetings: The San Francisco Walking Dykes group meets "rain or shine" to ensure consistency. If the weather is really nasty, most folks just won't come that day and it is understood.
Please feel free to email me if you have questions at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you request it, I will gladly add your email address to the list of walkers and you will receive regular, weekly updates with weather forecasts, recommended walks and news.
