Backpacking Edison Lake to Selden Pass

  • Jul 5, 2013 · 6:30 AM

Three day moderate trip to explore another section of the John Muir Trail. Hike in 8-10 miles and base camp for two nights with pack free day hiking the middle day. Drive up Friday Morning. Leave Santa Cruz around 6:30. Drive home Sunday Night. July 5-7 2013. I have four wilderness permits reserved but the Bear Ridge trail head at Edison lake is not heavily used so additional permits will probably be available if needed.

I hope your gear and food is ready.

Ted plans on driving up tomorrow evening. I will drive up early Friday. I will pick up wilderness permits in Prather on my way up the mountain. There is AT&T cell phone coverage at Edison lake. I do not have At&T but I can call Ted's number from Prather and give him an estimate of when I will arrive. The current plan is to kike up the bear ridge trail starting next to the Edison Lake dam until we join the John Muir Trail and head south toward Seldon pass as far as we want. If Ted and his friends want to start in earlier on Friday or go in a different way they can probably pick up permits at the forest service station on the Kaiser Pass Road a few miles before Mono Hot Springs. You can call me at[masked] or[masked] to discuss more details and coordination.

Also, I'm new to California, so what should I know about weather for this trip? I have a 20 degree bag - am I good with that or should I bring my liner? And are rain pants necessary or will a shell be enough? Thanks!

Ok I'm in and I just found out I don't have to work Thursday either! Wahoo! I just need to know where and when to meet everyone. Would love to carpool and save on gas. Thanks!

I just joined this group and am interested in this trip. I'd be even more interested if a few women jumped in. . . any takers??
