How did you get interested in film?

I studied Radio Television and Film at the University of Maryland in the late 80s. I was a communication major after being a music major (piano) with an AA degree in Music. I believe we can send the largest message through film and the social media to reach the largest audience in today's world. I am an activist and care deeply about the underserved and underrepresented in this world. I was inspired to make my first film, We're Here To Stay" in 1998 as a result of being on the board of Hands Off Washington because no one was doing what they were doing and it is a primer for grassroots organizing at the statewide level on an initiative. After that, I was inspired to study hate crimes and in Sept. 1998 I took my first trip to Texas and began filming around the James Byrd. Jr. murder.

What sorts of films interest you?

I love Italian movies, or movies with Italians in them. Perhaps because I grew up on the east coast. Moonstruck is my all time favorite. I love documentaries and biographies. I also like cult films and classics. I think it would be fun to make some mock up mafia comedy's sometime because the other films are so serious...these films could show all the goofy things that could go wrong when bungling a job...

Have you made or invested in films before?

I have invested my time and money in my work since the mid-1990s. i am also the Founding owner of Seattle Cleaning Service and started this company to support my film work in 2003. I am looking for investors. I am looking for Microsoft people that can throw a party to raise money for my films and I can offer them a 100% tax deduction for their contribution through my fiscal agent. I would like to double the money I raise through the Microsoft charitable contributions program.

What day of the week / time is best for you to meet with local film makers?

Not Thursdays. Weekends are good for me and Wednesday nights and Friday nights are good too.

What Liz L. is saying about this Meetup Group

I think the group of people are very nice. I am not certain that experienced filmmakers will want to participate in this group but you just never know. There is a lot to learn and even experienced filmmakers who have an open mind can learn something from this group. I think the group is still defining itself, its purpose and what it is and wants to become. It isn't clear yet what the mission statement of this group is. Not sure if investors are available for documentaries or if investors are only interested in investing in for profit's just not clear to me what this group is about and I would venture to guess that the group is in agreement with that. However, I will attend the next meeting because I did learn some things and I enjoyed meeting everyone in the room and who knows, we may create some short film together and that would be fun!
