First Meeting! Let's get this started.

Let's meet to get this group going. Since it's brand new, I'd love help shaping where it'll be going.

FYI, I just posted two things in the discussions. One was a breakdown of the meeting last week. The other is the survey I put to those who attended. If you missed this meeting, I'd really appreciate you looking at the survey, and getting back to me your answers. Thanks so much!

Visiting my dying Grandpa in Colorado. Hopefully next time.

Sorry to hear that Christina. Best wishes to you and your family.

      Thank you. :)

So sorry to have missed the meeting. Drove around Rancho Cordova--I'm not at all familiar with it-and just couldn't locate i. both mapquest and yahoo told me to get off at Zinfandel, and I did find a gold center drive, but obviously there must be another one. I'm hoping someone took notes and is willing to share. Next time I'll scout the location in advance. Can we get email addresses/phone numbers??

    March 15

    • Kyle P.

That's exactly what happened to me. Mapquest didn't know what I was talking about and sent me to rancho Cordova with no real destination. I found out later it's actually golden (instead of just gold) centre lane and it's off of sunrise.

      March 15

    • Amanda C.

Bummer I missed out on meeting you both! I'll be contacting you tomorrow with my contact info so we can avoid this in the future. Sorry!

  • Amanda C.

Thanks so much for an awesome meeting! I was a true pleasure to meet you all. Kyle and Veronica, I'm so sorry you got lost! I'll be sure to give more indepth directions next time.

For anyone who missed the meeting, I'll be posting in the forum section meeting notes so you don't have to feel like you missed out. Truly a pleasure! I'll be posting soon when the next one will be and where. :-)

This was an excellent first meet up. It was a very good turnout, full of creative souls of almost every description…Amanda is, indeed, an organizer, as her title indicates, and presented us with a number of questions about writing and what we wanted from the group…If you missed the meeting, I"m sure Amanda will be sending you the questions so your input will be counted. I"m looking forward to being a part of this group, the dynamic is interesting...

thanks for posting that, Kyle. I felt like such an idiot--lost in Rancho Cordova???--for heaven's sake!

Mapquest betrayed me and I couldn't find the place. Maybe next time.

I am back to square 1 with my jobsearch and so that will take up some time - I'll be active in the group once that gets situated!

Yeah I am sorry that I will not be able to make this first meeting. SoCal bound for work.

  • Veronica R.

Thank you, this sounds a good first meeting venue, and I will bring something, very short, and tuck it into my notebook should we not get that far or if it would be better saved for another meeting. And thank you, Amanda, for putting this all together, no easy task!

As for bringing writing, if you'd like to, yes! Critiquing won't be the focus of this meeting, but at the least you could find someone willing to give you feedback. I'd definitely do it if no one else would. As for location, if you haven't been to this Starbucks, it's BIG. Much bigger than most. I didn't expect such an awesome turn out, but there is a table big enough to fit 20 outside (and the weather looks like it'll be awesome Saturday). I'll be arriving very early to snag that table. I do want to discuss with everyone alternative ideas for locations. I've been researching possible locations, and will bring what I've got to the group. I'm looking forward to meeting you all Saturday. I love what a diverse group we've got going.

Amanda, first, let's raise a mug of whatever for you to pull this together. Very well done. And maybe I should be careful, but at the same time, given that there are so many local home-grown places that are shutting down, maybe after the first meeting, let's give them some love while we can.

I live near Watt and Hwy 50. I'll go any of these places…I prefer daylight driving if possible. Can't wait to meet everyone!

    March 8

  • Veronica R.

Agreed-I don't go any further west than Gold River either! Also up in the foothills--my question was-is-should we bring samples of our writing or are we just figuring out the shape we want the group to have? Can't imagine any group where everyone shows up ALL the time, just thought twenty was high.

As for location, I was going to see if Folsom might work. Gold River is about as far west as I can go. Midtown is too far! I live up in the foothills.

    1 · March 7

  • Dan B.

Chuck: absolutely totally spot on. Why not take advantage of a place with some more character while its still in business?
Veronica: ditto. I am in Midtown if it helps, and I wouldn't mind connecting with folx down here. What if the weather is nice? Could we meet at a quiet picnic table in the shadows?

    March 7

  • Veronica R.

Shall we bring something that we've written? I write both fiction and non-fiction, plus some poetry. Or is this an organizational kind of meeting? and how many people are we expecting (twenty seems to me a very high number for an effective writing group).

    1 · March 7

  • chuck w.

I would really appreciate identifying any NON-FICTION participants at the first meeting. Thanks.

15-20 of us shoehorned into a Starbucks? Suggest a library meeting room next time.

    1 · March 7

  • Amanda C.

Hey everyone, we're almost a week away, and I would love your input! What would you like to talk about, focus on, accomplish at these meetings?

    March 6

    • Dan B.

What about meeting in one of the funkier places in the older part of Citrus Heights? I've taken the 21 bus up there before and there's this part of town that has a lot of buildings with nice architecture.

It looks now I'll be playing a jam that afternoon so I cannot make it. However, I will leave you with this ... VOID

    Stillness.

    Out of soft black
    Void . . . frozen empty
    Silently suddenly
    Sounds
    Clicking tinkling
    Chimes? No!

    Incomprehensible
Bits of icy teeth with steely eyes
    Like bullets fly
    Towards me
    Sparkling screaming gnashing
    Painful
    In their glittering brilliance
    Struck ad infinitum
    Burning. Blanket cocoon
    Webbed . . . frozen scream
    Gasping drowning tossing
    Breathe, again, again
    Fetal darkness rotation
    Awaiting dawn . . . Stillness.

See you at the next one.
    Scott

Would definitely like to connect when we can. You are very right on and write in exactly what we need more people to do.

Thanks so much! I'll post the next meeting right after this wraps up. Just want to touch base to see what's convenient for everyone for deciding what the 'regular' meetings will be.

I can't do anything on Sundays. That is church/family time. I can't meet during the day time before 4 pm due to working. So I like your Saturday afternoon time!

Hi Amanda. Looks like the first and third Saturday is what you have come up with. I already have a critique group that meets then. I have Mondays, Sunday afternoons open. I belong to California Writers Club and Sac Suburban Writers. I'm finding I'm belonging to too many and not spending enough time writing. LOL. I have not had one story contract signed for this year! I'm beginning to panic.

I would like to meet you all but will not be able to attend Sat because I have to go to a friends funeral. Please keep me in mind for future meetings
