The first time we will "expose" a dog to stock their reaction can vary greatly from they don't do much but sniff and walk around to all out chasing the sheep. Herding is usually a very new experience for your dog and they can get a little overwhelmed by all the new sights, sounds and scents, the new people and dogs.
We put the dogs on stock twice during each lesson
We use the "round pen" for new dogs so we can have some control over the situation and there are no corners for the stock to get stuck in. I will "start" your dog and help him "turn on " to stock. Once I get the dog started then it's your turn and I start teach you the dance that keeps you in position so your dog can "fetch" (bring) the sheep to you.
When you get to the pasture go ahead and open the gates and drive in and park.
Watch out for loose dogs.
Don't forget to close gates.
Returning Handlers May get some precedence until 10:30, but is a good time for the newer handlers to come and watch.
Dog may not run in strict first come/ first order.
We run most dogs twice and it can take more than that to get some dogs to "turn on" to stock.
For the new people here are some of the rules that will allow us to continue working at the Pasture:
All dogs on leash
Clean up after your dog
DO NOT LEAVE CIGARETTE BUTTS ON THE GROUND
There is a trash can for dog waste, but make sure you get it in the paper feed bag that is in the can.
There is a recycle bin for cans and bottles but take home your other trash, there is no trash pick-up there so we take ours home.
If you go through a gate that is closed close it behind you, if you are not sure close it.
Any Questions....ASK!
