Here are the sources for a topic that we discussed during the August meeting.

Source: FBI Uniform Crime reporting tool

Source: National Police Misconduct Statists and Reporting Project

Source: Wikipedia list of countries by size of police force

All statistics are per 100,000

Murder:

civilian - 5.0
police - 43.7

Rape

civilian - 28.7
police - 77.0

You can pull some other interesting comparisons from the sources above but those two should be enough to show that the assertion that police make us safer certainly should not be accepted as obvious.

Hey Jack,

Where are you getting the police rates from? I can't find that in the first two links.

You need to do some math. Take the numbers from the National Police Misconduct Statists and Reporting Project and divide by the size of the police force.
