The Southeast Michigan Poetry Meetup Group Message Board › We are a team of like minds...so where are you?
As promised to the group, I have gone through our meeting list, and have found of 114 members, only 34 have EVER attended a meeting.
Yes, the location and time may not work for you. We have lives. Schedules. Commitments. But if you signed up here, there is a creative corner of your mind that begs to be nourished, to grow, to change, to evolve into the poetic voice that is YOURS alone.
That's why we are here.
DON'T be afraid of critique! In this group, critique is in the listening, the reading, and the perspective of the group. We are all readers of poetry, and writers of poetry. We "get" the writing life that sometimes has to sneak into the wee hours after the children are in bed, the hour when you get up, a few minutes you jot down in a notebook and return to. We know that you are writing on your computer, on the back of an envelope, in a notebook, a note in your cell phone, a message or e-mail to yourself. AND we know that the "critique" that you need, and we embrace, are the words and phrases and expressions and ideas that may have more meaning than you realize, better ways of expressing your uniqueness, and ideas that you may not have thought of. WE ALL COME TO THIS GROUP WITH THE IDEA THAT WE WANT TO BE BETTER POETS, AND WE ARE EACH OTHERS' SUPPORT SYSTEMS, ALLIES, AND DEVILS' ADVOCATE TO BECOME BETTER POETS. Nobody says "You suck." We tell you what we think, and most importantly WHY we think what we do. You come away with useful information, a feeling of community and of cameraderie.
If you are among the 30 who have come to the Meetup, you probably leave energized, inspired, full of ideas, and ready to set in motion the thoughts of your fellow poets. If you haven't been here, please make time for yourself and your passion for words.
