The Speckled Band Book Club Meetup

Morning everyone!

We had a good discussion on Thursday. People praised the style of 'Like Water for Chocolate' and enjoyed the depth and poetry of the writing, the magic aspects of the magical realism and the insights into life in Mexico at the time.

However, it was also thought that the deceptively easy style and the self-absorption of the characters made parts of it a bit bland and some were a bit irritated by the simplistic romance.

Our book for November is Patrick Leigh Fermor's 'A Time of Gifts', the theme is Walks and Pilgrimages and it was suggested by Ruth.

See you in November - when the Speckled Band Book Club will have its third birthday.

Best wishes,

Valerie

parking for up to 10 cars around the left side of the building - there's no lighting at night. Or park in the main road, or in the public car park behind the library. Bound to be somewhere near...

Sorry guys, I won't be able to attend the next meeting as I have double booked myself onto a yoga course on Thursday evenings. It may be finished by the December meeting, so I look forward to getting the next book title. Have a fun evening on the 14th. Catriona

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
