Thoroughly enjoyable meetup on Thursdy so thanks to all those who attended. Details will follow below. December's book will be 'The Sea' by John Banville, from the theme 'Beside the seaside, beside the sea' chosen by Ruth.
October's book 'Mist Over Pendle', although not considered "witchy enough" to for the Halloween theme, was largely liked by the group. Readers enjoyed the thoughtful discussion of 17th century politics and religion and found it an interesting take on the true story of Alice Nutter.
The tone of the book was seen as very feminist, there were many portrayals of female characters being strong-minded, knowledgeable, shrewd and independent and the women characters did all sorts of interesting things and were just as important and useful as the men.
However, it was argued that the novel was also a very "feminine" book with lots of focus on "fripperies, fabrics and clothes. "
The wild setting of Pendle and the Lancaster area was also strongly-praised, readers loved the descriptions of the "dark and glowering" Pendle Hill and the winter weather.
By the way, next month will be our Christmas meetup so if you'd like to participate in the Secret Santa, bring a wrapped-up book as a gift and something nice to eat.
