This is a virtual meetup to help people interested in making an Annual Voluntary Contributions toward Stamford Bicycling Group Meetup forum site maintenance, content management, and subscription fee. A virtual meetup does not take place at any location of time. It is simply an event placeholder for people to use to make the Voluntary Contributions using the Meetup.com payment system (i.e. Paypal)
Meetup.com doesn't charge individuals to join the Meetup Groups,post events, or attend events. That is Meetup is free for members.
However, the Meetup Group Organizer (that's me) is responsible for paying a $20 monthly Meetup Group Subscription Fee as well as doing site maintenance and content management. The subscription fee is charge directly to the Organizers credit card. Some Organizers collect a nominal fee and meetup events, while others setting membership dues or a fee to join the Meetup group.
Stamford Bicycling Group does not charge membership dues or meetup fees at our gatherings like many other groups do. We instead ask that our members make a voluntary contribution toward the cost of the subscription, site maintenance, content management. If you contribute and how much you contribute is up to you. If you are not an active member of the group, it is ok for you to choose not to contribute. In fact, it is ok if, for what ever reason, you choose not to contribute even if you are very active. When we paddle or meet for socials, no one asked if you paid a voluntary contribution. Voluntary contribution are a personal decision for each person to make individually.
However, Meetup.com does charge the group a subscription fee and someone has to manage the site. If you use this social networking forum in any way you are benifiting from the fact that others are supporting the forum. The Voluntary Contributions is not a fee for participating in any particular event. As a member of the group forum you are utilizing the group whether or not you attend any paddle events or socials. You are a user of the group forum simply by the fact that you chose to be a member. Because you are a voluntarymember of the forum we ask that you voluntary contribute atleast $1.
What does that $1 contribution get you. Well, Meetup.com also does not manage individual groups either. Site maintenance and content management is the responsibility of the "group owner" (i.e. the person being charged for the site... me). Some groups spread this responsibility out among co-organizers and assistant organizers, but SKG is managed by one person who serves as the site moderator. The moderator devotes personal time making sure the forum is up to date. (but, the site manager/Group Organizer is not an outfitter, guide, or group leader).
Anyway, To make it easier for members who want to pitch in a Voluntary Contributions, I have set up a Paypal account. I am asking for only $1 per member, but many will not contribute. The few that do usually contribute $10 to $20, and it is through their support that we are able to pay the subscription fee charged by Meetup.com.
