Thank you Joan; we all start pretty 'green' (no pun
intended)  - - it sure makes it easier if we have help
along the way.  25 years ago I struggled to find my way
thru the maze of going from the standard american diet
to vegan..   I've never forgotten how hard it was for
me.  Now I view it as going from the 'completely
unfamiliar to the familiar'..   so it becomes much
easier, plus there's so much information available
today. . its a tremendous benefit for those new to this
wondrous and gentle lifestyle.

You must have more patience than I...   when people
start talking about their 'meds' I usually remove
myself from the situation -- or change the
conversation.   I can't listen to that anymore.... . it
seems so barbaric to me; sort of from the dark ages..
its time to come out of those beliefs and behaviors - -
yet they treat meds or surgeries as if they're badges
of honor..to be held in awe and esteem..   Its all so
ridiculous to me.

I love your suggestion about putting names and lists of
ingredients on any pot luck dish. .  that's a great
idea...    I often think of that 'during or after' an
event..  Must make a note of that..

Yes Jenny Cornbleets' book is terrific for getting
started -- and I had
neglected to put that on "my short list" (which
included the Boutenko's
Eating Without Heating and the newer edition of 12
Steps to Raw Food)  '

I like Amsden's book too - a little more complex but
his onion bread is
worth the price of the book!

You are so right about prescription meds.  When I'm
with friends they love
to tell me how weird I am because of how I eat.
But they soon get on to their favorite subject, their
meds.  I can't join in
this conversation because I don't have any.
So I just listen, knowing that soon they will turn back
to me to tell me how
weird I am!

I love your breakfast!
Totally agree about just keeping the week simple and
not worrying too much
about gourmet --
And I love our potlucks, trying different foods and
flavors I may not have
thought of before.
At ours we ask everyone to put their name (in case
someone wants to know
more) and an ingredient list at least (in case
individuals need to avoid
certain foods)

Your Vita Mix will be indispensible..   and also a
dehydrator and food processor are highly recommended.

I also work an office job..  am gone a minimum of 12
hours Monday thru Friday.  Get yourself 1 or two good
recipe books to start.. such as Matt Amsden's
Rawvolution.....or Jenny Cornbleet's Raw for 1 or 2
people. .   Check out Amazon.com for a variety of
options.  Recipe books will give you many many options.

I do all my dehydrating on the weekend.  Kale chips
take 6 hours to dehydrate..   crackers and onion bread,
etc. usually take 24 hours or more..

Don't feel bad, people in my lunchroom stare at my food
too....and have for many years.  (I've been vegan for
25 years now).. .  but I look at them..   and they
don't look very healthy while eating their packaged
processed foods and candy...  . but I do look healthy
and have not aged in the 24 years I've worked
here....and they have aged - in most cases very badly.
They're all on prescription medications...and having
all manner of surgeries for their ills..  but I'm not..
and that is what's most important to me.

Many mornings my breakfast at work will be a whole
avacado blended with lots of parsley or cilantro.. 1/2
a lime, squeezed..  onion, all blended in my food
processor and placed over sliced celery.  Many people
may call it guacamole....but to me its just my
breakfast..  raw and healthy.   When I take the cover
off the wonderful fragrance fill the entire lunchroom
and all eyes are very oddly on my container...   but I
gobble it up without any notice of them..  as if what
I'm eating is normal, because its real food.  Most of
what "they" eat is not real food.

I leave for work at 7 am so I get up by 5 to get ready
for the day (shower, press my clothes, feed my cats and
bird, clean the litter box, etc) and prepare my fresh
lunch..  and whatever vegetable juice I want to make..
with a few chips or crackers that I've dehydrated..
and my drinks for the day.

Be sure to do only simple things for during the week..
play with more complex things when you have time..
attend pot lucks when you can to see what others
prepare...  know that everything does not have to be
gourmet..  Most people in your lunchroom are probably
eating something frozen that comes out of a box..  At
least you are putting thought into your foods....and
cleaning your cells with every bite..

Edra,

I am in the same boat as you are, just a beginner and
making my first baby steps at Raw Living.

I am currently looking for ideas for lunches at work...
I have a 8-9 hour a day office job and I have already
started drawing attention with what I am eating (in the
lunchroom). It's good and bad, because I can share
things, but I also realize this is not going to be that
easy.

Yesterday I had to close my eyes passing some stuff
displayed on those headers at Dominick's - on my way
from the produce department to the checkout line. I
left the store with just the green stuff and proud of
myself though. I feel some much better transitioning to
raw foods, but I am afraid I will run out of ideas for
salads. I have started making smoothies in my Vita-Mix
that recently arrived... But I will need ideas and
support from all of you guys, what is it that you guys
find most nutritious and filling when let's say stuck
at a job for hours without much time for food
preparation?

And 4th of July survival suggestions anyone...??
