The Sweetness: Astoria Book Club

The Breakdown: We read good books. We're looking for other intellectually curious, like-minded 20somethings (a vague guideline) in Astoria (another vague guideline) to read them with us, share some food, drink, and sweet convo.

The Criteria For Choosing Said Good Books: Magical language (with a healthy dash of magical realism), fresh voices (love a debut) irreverent to painfully relevant, growing up, growing old, dying, coming back to life, urban culture to Southern idyllicy, savory books that you can chew on, Bloody Marys, chips and smokey salsa, bacon (if you're into that sort of thing), vibrant fiction, creative non-fiction, and that mess in between.

Some Favorites: Another Bullshit Night in Suck City - Nick Flynn, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao - Junot Diaz (and Drown, also by Diaz... this guy is golden), What is the What - Dave Eggers, Tits Up in a Ditch - Annie Proulx, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay - Michael Chabon, The Passage - Justin Cronin, Eating Animals - Jonathan Safran Foer.

The Time/Place: Monthly on Saturdays(ish) or Sunday(ish) when the sun is out at a bar/food establishment somewhere in the Hood. If you've got two hours to spare and would like to spend it with us we'd love to have you!

Some Nitty Gritty: Please make sure to read the book! Even if you hate it and have to choke it down, we'd love to hear about why you hated it. Reading the book stimulates the conversation and we're all about sweet convo. Also, please only RSVP Yes if you plan on attending. No-shows will get you removed from the group (but I wouldn't worry about being a no-show as we're tons of fun and if you RSVP I know, come Hell or high water, you'll show)!
