Moving away from AUTO - Beginners Photography Tutorial

  • Feb 17, 2013 · 3:00 PM

After running events for The Sydney Photography Meetup Group for the last 4 years, the most asked question from members is "What's the best setting?"

My answer is always, "There's no best setting, but...", and then I go on about the basics of photography and how to determine the desired settings depending on the situation.

So as I'm going to start running tutorial classes designed to teach suitable camera settings for different situations, such as night photography to portraits or sports photography, the fundamental of photography have to be known first to even implement these settings.

The 2 hour Beginners Photography Tutorial is for those who have used their camera (DSLRs and High End Compacts eg 4/3rds) to date with the dial set to AUTO, but will like to learn how to control their photography even more. This tutorial is suited for true beginners or those wanting to refresh the concepts of photography.

This tutorial will first cover the basics of how a camera works, and then introduce the concepts of photography in the first hour. Then we'll walk around Darling Harbour to get to know your camera better by taking specific shots using different settings during the 2nd hour. You will receive a set of take home tutorial notes to continue practicing the basic settings.

We will meet on the front steps of IMAX first at 3:00pm sharp, to start the sit down tutorial.

o Camera that has full Manual capabilities

o Full charged camera battery

o Empty Memory card

o Camera manual (unless you know how to change settings)

o Clothes appropriate for the weather

o Comfortable walking shoes

o Plastic bag to protect your camera if there is rain

o Pen and paper to write notes

Tutorials are limited to 10 people so that I can help each one of you with as much attention as possible.

Cameras suitable for this tutorial include DSLR, 4/3rds and high end compacts with manual functions. If you are unsure whether your camera is suitable, please ask me prior to booking.

$20 for the 2 hour tutorial

Tutorials will still run in bad weather. Unless the conditions are deemed unsuitable (i.e. torrential rain or extreme winds), the tutorials will be postponed to a more appropriate date. Emails will be sent 3 hours prior with regards to this matter for cancelations.

Refunds will be acknowledged only if the tutorial is cancelled due to bad weather.

Please note your RSVP is only applicable after payment.

I found the "Moving away from Auto" meetup very enlightening. Especially when combined with the correct ISO and Exposure settings.

Really good! Not too many people so we all got a good amount of attention which was great. Richie explains things well and makes you feel very welcome to ask questions, I feel like I learnt something that I can now keep practicing.

    Hi Richie,

For tomorrow's tutorial, could you please be aware that I have to leave 2 hours in advance to get there in time from where I live. If anything happens in that time that things are cancelled due to weather, or if you move from the IMAX steps and I haven't arrived yet, please let me know via my phone: 0416220856. I should be there on time, my train arrives at 2.40 and I'm sure I can walk there from Central in 20 minutes.

    See you tomorrow!
