  • May 24, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Vivid Sydney Festival is around the corner!!! YAY!!!

If you are unfamiliar with the annual Vivid Festival, it is one of Sydney's premier events where you can see The Sydney Opera House bathe in a multitude of dazzling lights. Major buildings around Circular Quay will come alive with 3D light show. There will be several interactive light installations throughout The Rocks, Circular Quay and Walsh Bay to keep you entertained... and it is no doubt perfect to opportunity to photograph the vibrant lights of Sydney on your camera.

I will once again be running a night photography tutorial capture the best parts of Vivid Sydney Festival.

The Vivid Sydney Festival Night Photography Tutorial is aimed at beginner and intermediate photographers that already understand the basic concepts of photography (i.e. aperture, shutter and ISO) but haven't had much experience with night photography, or for those that need a refresh their knowledge of night photography.

WHAT IS IN THE TUTORIAL

The tutorial will commence with a sit down class, teaching the essential aspects of night photography. I will also make sure you know how to change the settings on your camera. From there we will wander to several Vivid Sydney Festival installations around Sydney Harbour to put the concepts learnt in the tutorial into practice. The first part of the tutorial is teaching the basic camera settings required for night photography. From there I will show some interesting techniques that will make you photos more interesting.

The tutorial is limited to 10 people so that I can help each one of you with as much attention as possible.

What an absolutely crazy first night for Vivid. Perfect conditions for night photography before we arrive. Then it absolutely bucketed down at 6:45, before becoming perfect again at 7:00pm. Short time later it poured again. That sort of set the tone for the night... but did that stop us? Most definitely not. For those that turned up, thank you so much for braving the elements. And the awesome thing was that even though you were constantly taking out your cameras, putting your tripods on, then minutes later putting them back in your bags and running for shelter, you all ended up with some amazing shots. I hope you learnt a lot in the tutorial. And do study those tutorial notes back home so that you can come back to Vivid on any of the other nights to capture this amazing event...

Hi Ritchie. . I might be about 15 mins late, still on my way.. on the train. its raining alot in Marrickville, but I guess it's still on :)

Hi Ritchie am just near entrance of sebel pier one its pouring! Not sure where stairs r to meet am I close by? Am on hickson rd is it possible to post your mobile no?

  • Monique P.

Like most of us I'm sure, hoping the rain eases up by tomorrow night especially if this event is not going to be rescheduled regardless of the weather conditions!!

    May 23, 2013

    • Richie

Yes Monique... fingers crossed. Mind you at Vivid events in previous years, when it rained even more spectacular effects are seen when the light reflected on the rain. Plus there is the added bonus of more likely to be less people crowding around the city to get that ideal vantage point. Either way, we will find sufficient shelter in and around the harbour for the tutorial at the start and to capture Vivid. So see you all tomorrow night

So disappointed there are no spots left. Any chance of more groups being set up. I think you have enough stragglers to fill another group.

Is the tutorial suitable if one uses compact camera ?

    May 2, 2013

    • Richie

Depends what compact. Some compacts have some manual functions. However this tutorial is more aimed for high-end compacts, 4/3rds and dslr cameras as they will benefit more from the tutorial

    Hi,
I have the same problem, I don't have a decent tripod. Does anybody spare one?
    Thanks.

    April 30, 2013

    • Richie

Like I said above to K, buying a tripod for not too much compared to what you spent on the camera will improve your night photos considerably. Hope this helps.

      April 30, 2013

    • Richie

If you can borrow one from a friend is just as good.

      April 30, 2013

  • K

Hi I am interested however I don't have a tripod, is this an absolute must?

    April 30, 2013

    • Richie

Hi K, unfortunately a tripod is required for long exposure times. Sorry.

      April 30, 2013

    • Richie

You can get away without a tripod in some situations where there is a stable platform to put you camera on. However this can be very awkward. Maybe you can ask friends. Otherwise purchasing one for not too much (as long as it can handle the weight of your camera) is a good investment if you want to take night photos.
