Recommended Sci Fi / Fantasy / genre TV:

Game of Thrones
The Walking Dead
Alphas
Doctor Who
Torchwood
Eureka

Just a few for now, can add more later, all of the above are shows that are current.

That's a good start :)
I'd add (from shows currently or recently on air):

True Blood
Fringe
Warehouse 13
Community (not Sci-Fi or Fantasy - but see the paint ball eps and the D&D episode. Oh, and the Zombie one!)
Being Human (UK - US one is OK, but takes a few eps to get there!)
Sanctuary (Amanda Tapping post-SG1... and a Michael Shanks impersonator!)
Falling Skies (mixed, but pretty good)
Misfits

Couple more that are worth seeing - but not necessarily essential:
Primeval (pretty good - but they keep losing cast members!)
Teen Wolf (the main characters are truly awful, but there's two brilliant supporting characters - smart-arsed son of a cop, and a bitchy maths genius :)
Outcasts (haven't finished it yet - but worth seeing just for the production values. Pity the characters are so unlikeable!)

I <3 The Guild

A lot of people's lists are very new.

Here's my "old school" list:
* Star Wars original trilogy
* Blade Runner
* Terminator 1 & 2
* Alien and Aliens
* LOTR
* Army of Darkness
* Star Trek OS and TNG

New:
* Firefly
* Battlestar Galactica
* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
* Pushing Daisies (OK, that's not traditional fantasy but...)

It'd be cool if this forum allowed voting on polls.

Would people be interested in having an essential movie night on 8 Oct? Would Metropolis and Blade Runner would be an excellent pairing of two films for common themes?

In no particular order

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Time Bandits
H. G. Wells The Time Machine (the original the remake was shite)
Donnie Darko

Ok that all I can think of right now, now would some one organise a DVD night based on all of our answers, we could have a vote to see whitch movies to whatch.
