The book this month is The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Michael Chabon. This is Chabon's first novel, which he began writing when he was a 21-year-old undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh. He submitted it as his Masters thesis while at the University of California at Irvine. One of his advisors, the novelist MacDonald Harris, sent it to his literary agent. It was published in 1988, when Chabon was 25, and became a bestseller. Chabon went on to write The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Summerland, and The Yiddish Policemen's Union, but here we get to sample this writer at the beginning of his career.

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh tells the story Art Bechstein, the son of a mob money launderer. Bechstein's father wants him to succeed in a legitimate career, but when he graduates from his Pittsburgh college, he has only a vague hope for a summer of adventure before he commits to the rest of his life. Bechstein meets a charming young gay man, a highly literate biker, and an insecure young woman. All of Bechstein's relationships with his family, friends. and lovers become more and more entangled, causing a series of falling outs and unforeseen consequences.
