Here Comes the Sun
September 8, 2013
Although 150 years and the expanse of Europe separate the two quartets on this program, they both feature what we might call today “world music fusion.” In his String Quartet in D Major, Op. 20 No. 4 (1772), Haydn incorporates gypsy music from his native Austria-Hungary in the lively third movement. Ravel’s sublime String Quartet in F Major [masked]) glows with the exoticism of the Indonesian gamelan, which the composer encountered at the Paris Exhibition of 1889.
