Founded in 2008, The Zeitgeist Movement (TZM) is a sustainability advocacy group that operates through a network of regional chapters, project teams, public events, media expressions and charity operations. TZM's activism is explicitly based on non-violent methods of communication with the core focus on educating the public about the true root sources of many common personal, social and ecological problems today, coupled with the vast problem solving and humanity improving potential science and technology has now enabled, but yet goes unapplied due to barriers inherent in the current, established social system.
The Movement's principle focus includes the recognition that the majority of the social problems which plague the human species at this time are not the sole result of some institutional corruption, scarcity, a political policy, a flaw of "human nature" or other commonly held assumptions of causality in the activist community. Rather, The Movement recognizes that issues such as poverty, corruption, collapse, homelessness, war, starvation and the like appear to be "Symptoms" born out of an outdated social structure.
About Toronto Chapter
The Zeitgeist Toronto chapter started in January 2009 with its first meeting at the Toronto public library for the planning of the local event call: Z-Day (zeitgeist day) as part of the first global movement event. Since then, the chapter has done many events, public meetings, invitations by universities, screenings, town hall, awareness campaigns, radio and Internet media. The chapter also had been involved in social activities as such food collection and donation, as well in connection or partnership with another mind like groups.
What is a Chapter?
A chapter is defined as a group of active members of the Zeitgeist Movement in a particular region that serves and functions as an accurate representation of the Movement in their respective region. The Zeitgeist Movement has an organized structure built upon chapters to facilitate collective activism in an organized manner as well as the flow of information relating to a vast range of members.
What does a chapter ?
A TZM chapter establishes an organizational infrastructure in a given region for volunteers to team up and start developing projects with educational purposes. Which promote the movement train of thought. This primary educational focus rests on the assumption that for society to fully embrace science at its core and consequentially to move on a more sustainable and humane direction, the majority of the population needs to first understand the importance and mechanisms of science and the scientific method as well as attain a sustainable set of core values that promote mutual well being.
Such value and education shift should effectively generate change in the socio economic system towards a Natural Law / Resourced Based Economic Model by allowing and inspiring further types of activity such as policy changes, scientific and technological developments, societal trends than can progressively shift institutional power, and so on.
The activities chapters can actively engage in are quite diverse and largely subjected to the volunteer's creativity and knowledge set.
TZM seeks to communicate a Train of Thought with regard to how understanding and applying Scientific Reasoning can improve human society with respect to public health and societal sustainability. It seeks to generate an educated critical mass globally for the acceptance and implementation of this Train of Thought and hence the self-evident notions for social design that emerge from that logic. This is done through many programs and events, such as Zeitgeist Day, The Zeitgeist Media Festival, monthly Chapter Town-halls, Newsletters, Press Releases, Lectures, Radio shows, Social Networking, targeted Think Tank projects, and other mediums.
TZM works not only to create awareness of such problems and their true root causes (and hence logic for resolution), it also works to express the incredible potential we have, beyond such direct problem solving, to greatly improve the human condition in general, solving problems which, in fact, have not yet even been realized. This is initiated by embracing the very nature of scientific reasoning where the establishment of a near empirical train of thought takes precedence over everything else in importance. A train of thought by which societal organization as a whole can find a more accurate context for sustainability and efficiency on a scale never before seen, through an active recognition (and application) of the scientific method.
TZM is hence loyal to this train of thought, not figures, institutions or temporal technological advancements. Rather than follow a person or design, TZM follows this self-generating premise of understanding and it hence operates in a non-centralized, holographic manner, with this train of thought as the origin of influence for action.
There are multiple ways to help TZM to spread its train of thought
1-Be an advocate (spread the ideas)
2-Be a supporter (spread the ideas and do activities)
3-Be a member (spread the ideas, do activities and get involved in the local chapter)
The world you see today, full of war, corruption, elitism, pollution, poverty, epidemic disease, human rights abuses, inequality and crime is the result of these divisions. The movement itself is not a centralized construct. We are not here to lead, but to organize and educate.
