In this talk Dr Rosemary Lodge will talk about the findings of her recent research into emotional connection in therapy. This research showed that within the therapeutic relationship there was both a manifest and a hidden emotional level and that emotional connection was linked to client change at both levels. However, healing of the client's deepest hurts took place on the hidden level. On this level there was also a good match at an emotional level between client and therapist. The research provides support for the idea that 'being with' clients may be more therapeutic than 'doing to' clients and that some of the healing mechanisms within therapy may be about the emotional fit between the client and the therapist, rather than specific techniques.
Dr Rosemary Lodge is a counselling psychologist working in private practice. She is deputy course leader of the DPsych at NSPC where she also teaches existential theory and research methods and works as a supervisor. Her research interests are emotions, the therapeutic relationship, person-centred theory and mothering.'
