Site Analysis and Field Workshop at Cedar Cottage Community Garden

Yee Tong will lead us through the art of site analysis.
Participants will learn the concepts, hands-on feild skills, and employ simple but effective tools available to individuals of modest means. Sun exposure, Seasonality; Wind and Temperature patterns; Soil and Plants; Hydrology and Water budget. Time invested in doing a site analysis is returned in the form of time, labor and resoruces saved in the following days and seasons. It is done when approaching a prospective site for any form of activity not limited to planting an orchard garden.
We will build a simple tool to chart sun exposure, do a test to determine the composition of the soil, determine the hardiness zone of the region, identify microclimates and seasonal considerations, determine drainage and water budget.
What to bring:

1. Rigid peice of cardboard (minimum size of your hand; I will print-out images of a protractor for participants).
2. Scissors
3. Hand-length of string
4. An weight, ideally with a hole to attach string. Nuts/Bolts? Foreign Coins? Half-ounce weight will do.
5. Sketch-pad for drawing; colors would help (black, grey, blue, orange, green, brown/beige)
6. Graph paper (or bring ruler and be prepared to draw your own grid for graphing)
7. Note pad and pen.
8. Camera optional.
9. Dress for the weather and bring snacks.
10. Measuring tape(s).
11. Compass

    Response to Lisa's comment,

I am aiming to end at noon.

Depending on how things go, we could do more involved on-paper work at a local library- to display the information we gather in graphical form.

If anyone would like to do this: a detailed follow thru on the site-analysis, a video camera is very useful granted you get good footage for later reference. This second session would run from 1pm to 3pm.

I will be bringing my cellphone/videocamera that works good enough.

It was pretty cool seeing the garden and the workshop was a good exercise in discerning different elements of design and planning. It had a good balance of explanations and hands on activity.

The teachers were has served this workshop well, because it produced a propensity for action and a 'can-do' attitude sufficient to accomplish modest achievements. project planning and assessment. Combining permaculture ethics with architectural design principals. Informative on many aspects of ecological design, using Permaculture and sustainability Eco system and science concepts. I found that they have developed extensive habitat gardens and knowledge about the food and our environment (man land community and animals ) within the various system With enthusiasm I look forward to future permaculture workshops.
