Summer Smackdown: RDFa vs. Microformats vs. schema.org Microdata

The search engines have jointly announced they'll be supporting a microdata vocabulary, schema.org. For Google, this seemingly supersedes their prior support for RDFa and microformats (which, for the time being, Google will continue to support); for Bing this is their first formal foray into structured data markup. Did the search engines make the right decision? With vocabulary lock-in and lack of extensibility, do the flaws of a microdata format outweigh it's possible widespread adoption? Should web publishers continue to markup documents with RDFa or microformats, even though Bing doesn't support the language? So how about a summer meetup to discuss and debate?!

By the way, for all you keen-eyed readers, Bing has indeed announced support for RDFa and select microformats since the original announcement was posted.

Begin new to this group I read the "uber comparison" to get a idea of what's going on.

I was wondering if the major interests within lie more on the research side, commercial applications or something in between.

Should be an interesting meeting. Looking forward to it...

    Dan.

Hi all - sorry for the date change, but we now have confirmed the location.
If we are to fight efficiently, it would be great to have some background reading: Aaron suggested http://manu.sporny.org/2011/uber-comparison-rdfa-md-uf/, feel free to share your favorite doc here.
