I STARTED THIS GROUP BECAUSE POLE WALKING is G-R-E-A-T! I know about health and fitness! I had the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games in rowing, but my biggest achievement was putting my body back together after a devastating car accident. Not only that I'm a workshop facilitator; I love empowering people to take action for their own results...especially health and fitness. I tried pole walking in the summer of 2009 to strengthen my arms and shoulders so that I could carry the Winter Olympic Torch in style (hahahaaa..look good on TV) a few months later. To my delight, I discovered that pole walking is G-R-E-A-T with so many benefits . . . and I never stopped pole walking! I love it...easy, fresh air, effective.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS GROUP is: 1) TO FIND BUDDIES TO POLE WALK WITH, 2) TO ADD SOME FUND TO YOUR POLE WALKING FITNESS HABIT, 3) AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS WHILE GETTING FIT with Nordic Pole Walking.
THE ROLE OF COACH LINDA SCHAUMLEFFEL: My job is teaching people how to pole walk. I do that through www.nordicpolewalkingvictoria.ca where I offer lessons and courses. Once people know how to to walk many want to find buddies to walk with and more fun reasons to exercise with pole walking. That is what this Meet-Up group is for!
CURRENTLY A GROUP OF POLE WALK ENTHUSIASTS ARE LEARNING HOW TO ADMINISTER THIS SITE! There is a lot of behind the scenes technical stuff to learn, but we are doing it, and our goal is to make this site current and fun....a group that you want to participate with.
KINDS OF WALKS??? 1) find a buddy for a fitness walk, 2) meet new people for a social fun walk, 3) stretch you boundaries with a bigger one or two day adventure walk.
WHO SHOULD LEARN TO POLE WALK? 1) Anybody who can walk, can pole walk. 2) If you want to improve your posture (all desk workers...) 3) If you want to trim your waist and lose flab, 4) If you want to strengthen your low back/protect against injury, and improve performance in "rotational sports such as golf, paddling, racquet sports, 5) If you want to increase the calorie burning effect of your current walking program by 40%, 6) If you want an excuse to get outside and get active... 7) If you want fitness to creep up on you in an enjoyable way outdoor way! 8) If you want to meet like-minded people...social & get fit too.
MOST OF THE TIME, people bring their own poles to the Meet-Up walk; they already know how to pole walk (www.nordicpolewalkingvictoria.ca). SOME OF THE TIME it will be announced that you can rent poles and have a mini lesson before the walk! Some of the most enthusiastic pole walkers started this way.
COST???? As there is a semi-annual administrative fee to pay to operate this site, we ask that each participant at each event put a $2 into the jar to cover these expenses.
