I just joined the group, but I think James is right. Most people would be happy to pay their share to be a part of a good group. Small price to pay.

Mary,

I think it is probably time to find out if this group can be financially self-sustaining.

My guess is that most people willing to pay $5.00/year will also be willing to pay $10.00/year. I also guess that there's no more than 30 current members that will actually pay an annual fee of any kind.  (I actually think the number will be close to 20.)  Assuming there are 30 members willing to pay, and assuming an annual membership fee of $10.00, that first years income ($300.00) should be just enough to cover the annual meetup hosting fees for the following year ($142.00), leave enough surplus for you to recoup what you've previously paid (~$108.00), and perhaps leave a small amount (~$50.00) left over for supplies and/or to be used for an annual meetup party. If substantially more than 30 people pay the membership fee or we get a lot of new paying members over the next year, then the annual membership fee might be adjusted down next year or the surplus can be used for annual meetup mixers (winter and summer?) or put to some other good group use.

This also might be the time to make the group "private" (viewable by paid members only).  Why pay a membership fee for something available for free?

So my suggestion is to, effective May 1, have a $10.00 annual membership fee for access to a private meetup group. We should be able to pay our membership fee ASAP, and email notices of the pending change should be sent several times between now and the end of the month.

This change will also clear out the non-active members, and may prompt more participation from the remaining members (gotta get value for membership fees). And, I bet you and I will both be more motivated to do more meetups when more members sign up and participate.  Plus, paying members will have more of an "ownersip" interest in the group and may feel more motivated to do member-led meetups.

That's my two centavos worth.

Meetup Subscription??????
Hi Everyone, FYI I pay a meetup group subscription every 6 months. It is $72.00 ($12/6 months). Our subscription expires in 13 days, and although I do not mind paying the bill, I would like to take a survey to see how many members are willing to help pay for the subscription? I will put a survey in the "POLLS" section, please take a minute to fill it out.

Mary
