1E/2E AD&D: Greyhawk Campaign

Our heroes began last time searching the pile of slain Kobolds within the Caves of Chaos in northern Greyhawk. As the party gathers small amounts of treasure, some retrieve what arrows are usable while others stand watch. The Dwarven Cleric (Gerry) peeks around the northern end of the short hallway... He looks right (nothing). He looks left... Two arrows from behind him score hits and one as a critical (d20). The pain is severe, but not life ending. He pulls back into the short hallway and informs the party.

Our heroes form ranks in the short hallway and prepare to move around the corner in the direction from where the arrows originated. Relying only on their infravision to see, they decide to go to the right, but only after several rounds of discussing who will lead, how far to go down the hallway, and how fast to move. The Elven Fighter/Mage (Jeremy) stays to the right of the hallway goes 30' ft and stops. The Dwarf Fighter (Andy - run by Steven) stays along his side and also stops at 30 ft while others file in behind. Not able to see (infravision only detects heat sources), they stand in the hallway as their vision spots heat sources come in and then out of view. One arrow hits the Elven Fighter/Mage (Jeremy) and two hit the Dwarf (Andy) with one being a critical (d20).

The two lead members of the party stand their ground and return fire. Missing in part because the enemy are protected by a wall (-2 to hit) and poor rolling, the enemy fire another volley into the party standing in the middle of the hallway, 50' ft away. Two more hits score on the Dwarf (Andy) BOTH ARE CRITICALS(d20)!!! Unable to back up because he has six other party members and a dog right behind him the Dwarf takes 18 points of damage and falls dead.

The Dwarf Cleric (Gerry) charges the enemy along with the Elf (Jeremy). Our heroes are confused, and some stay where they are. Others charge to engage the enemy in melee, and others add lighting to the situation so all can see they are standing in the middle of a 70' ft hallway and were easy targets with nowhere to go but forward. The enemy get another round of attacks as our lead fighter and cleric movement rates and decisions limit the distance they can cover in one round. Melee begins.

There are three large Kobold guards at the ready. Wearing chainmail and with poor rolling our heroes find it hard to bring these enemies down, let along maintain initiative. The Cleric's (Ian) war dog is hit with a critical (d20) and his snout is broken and jaw damages so severely that he limps out of battle unable to attack. The battle rages. A door opens. Five female Kobolds run in and engage our heroes in battle. One Kobold guard falls. The newest member of the party (Jullian) joins in and smashes a female Kobold with one hit. He turns and says what is the problem? Just smash them! Along with the female Kobolds is the chieftain! The Elven Cleric (Ian) quickly casts hold person and the chieftain is immobilized. The battle rages and our heroes finally take the day. After exhausting multiple spells and healing major wounds, our heroes explore the chieftain's chambers and collect what treasure they can find. Our heroes explore the last of the Kobold's chambers and rest for the night.

The next day the party moves out of the Kobold tunnels and across the revene back into the Goblin tunnels to make their way up to the second level of the caves. Exiting the caves at the Hobgoblin area, they move along the ridge and into a new cave. The walls of this cave are far from crafted. They are rough, stone and dirt, and more of a tunnel then a hallway. Our party moves in and after 30' ft all feel dizzy... None having any sense of direction. They try to go back to the entrance but find themselves at an intersection. They turn right (or left) and find themselves in a room. Quickly the party is engaged by three very hungry fire beetles. This battle goes much like the last. The DM rolls a couple critical hits (d20) and the party does not. However, the beetles are weak and the party takes control.

Moving down the hallway (or another one) the party comes to a dead end. The Elven Fighter/Thief (Danielle) locates a secret door. Eventually figuring out how to open it, Steven somehow finds himself in a hallway looking at the party. No loner dizzy, he calls to them to follow. After many going in all directions, and others bouncing off of each other, they eventually find that doing the opposite gets them out and into the hallway.

Locating another secret door at the end of this hallway, the Elven Fighter/Mage (Jeremy) and Fighter/Thief (Danielle) open the door into a room. Immediately they are engaged by a Bugbear chieftain and his bride! Steven casts sleep on the female bugbear. The chieftain scores a hit. The Human Fighter (Jullian) rolls a critical fail (1 on a d20) and runs an arrow through his neck causing 17 damage and bringing him to -6. the Dwarven Fighter/Cleric (Gerry) moves in to engage the bugbear and trips over Jullian. Danielle scores an auto hit on the sleeping female bugbear, but does not do enough damage to kill her. She wakes up! Now the front line is Jeremy (wounded), Danielle (wounded), and Steven. Along with Jullian bleeding out (-7 now) and Gerry on top of him in full platemail.

Steven casts another sleep spell on the bugbears and the female goes back to sleep. However, this time he also gets Jeremy in the area of effect, and he fails both the 90% resistance to sleep and his saving throw! So the battle rages. The chieftain finally falls. The female bugbear wakes up and is slain by the Dwarf (Gerry) immediately. Searching the room they locate a chest. High up in the corner. The party finally decides that the best plan is to pull it down with a rope and catch it in a blanket. It falls like a stone. Opening the chest they find gold and silver, one potion, and another that broke in the fall.

Exiting the room our heroes are engaged by two more bugbears on the stairs down while Jullian and Danielle locate a supply room full of food. Jullian sees a shield used as a tray to hold herbs and takes it for himself. As the battle rages in the hallway, both sides take damage and our heroes again win the day. This is where we will begin...

Hope to see you all next Thursday!
