Dungeons & Dragons: Frog-Men of the Chaos Scar!

The Wandering Dragon presents: Frog-Men of the Chaos Scar!

Frog-Men of the Chaos Scar is an adventure for 1st-level characters that takes place in the Chaos Scar, near the King’s Wall. It pits the PCs against a tribe of evil creatures that have taken up residence in a long-ruined keep. The keep, once the abode of a goliath sorcerer, holds a powerful magic item, the staff of earthen might. Can the characters overcome the monsters and reclaim the staff, or will they be forever trapped in the Elemental Mud of the creatures lair?”

My daughter was going to make a Tiefling mage would this be ok?

Tieflings are legal, as are most mage-type classes....just have her check her class against the list below and she should be fine.

Excellent and thank you for the quick response! I look forward to it. I will pick up a 4th edition PHB and take a crack at a first level character (if I fail - I can always fall back on a pre-gen). 4d6 for stats?

The PHB is one way to get into it all, but right now, I'd recommend the two smaller books - Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms - from the Essentials line. Expecially if you plan on playing in Encounters! The Encounters program does not generally use builds from the PHB any more, but from the Essentials books forward. It would be a better investment for Encounters. And, I think the two smaller books is the same cost as the single hardbound PHB. As for generating your scores, I'd recommend using one of the arrays from page 38 in the Essentials books.

I'll go ahead and chime in here by saying: yup! Exactly what Jay said! The Essentials books don't just give you a general method for creating a character, but give you specific builds. That is, they tell you, level by level, what abilities a specific class should get. You don't have to wade through pages and pages of abilities and try to figure out which ones to get, you just choose from a much more limited selection. Of course, you still have to do a bit of wading when it comes to Feats. But at least that's the only time.

Does anyone have suggestions on Android D&D apps? All the way to character creation.

    December 29, 2012

    • Paul

I don't think there are any Apps designed to create characters, but if you have DnD Insider get DnD Buddy- I use it on my kindle fire. You just download your character and it'll load right up. It doesn't work well for Psionic classes, but other than that it's great... I think its like 4.99.

Have not played 4th edition before . . . But have been gaming for 25+ years. Should I sit this one out, or will there be an poppy to learn? Thx

    December 29, 2012

    • Jay

Fourth Edition is pretty easy to learn and very intuitive! We'll have pre-generated characters available from several different classes if you don't have one ready on your own! This is also a great chance to learn the game since this module is just basic and fun to play! There's a little role playing, some exploration and lots of good ol' combat against blubbery fiends!

This is going to be great. I might get another chance to get my daughter into it.

So what are the character creation guidelines for this? Is any race/class combo acceptable since this is an In-house adventure?

    December 18, 2012

    • Jay

Sorry to burst your bubble, but....no Hybrids, and no Dragonmarks!

      December 27, 2012

    • Paul

Ok cool, thanks for clearing it up!

      December 28, 2012

  • Jay

Frogmen of the Chaos Scar is an adventure for first level characters set in the world of the Nentir Vale. Most races and classes from Fourth Edition are allowed to be used EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING:

ILLEGAL CLASSES: Psion, Seeker, Battlemind, Hybrids, Ardent, Artificer, Assassin, Assassin (Executioner), Monk, Vampire

ILLEGAL RACES: Bladelings, Bugbear, Bullywugs, Drow, Duergar, Gnolls, Goblins, Hengeyokai, Hobgoblin, Kenku, Kobold, Minotaur, Mul, Orc, Revenant, Satyr, Shade, Shardmind, Svirfneblin, Thri-kreen, Vryloka, Warforged.

Also, no defining elements from other campaign settings are allowed (i.e. No Spellscars from Forgotten Realms, No Dragonmarks from Eberron, etc.)

We will not be doing a character creation session for this short adventure, so please bring a fully-created character to this session. If you have not created a character, or are using one with an illegal build, we will have pre-generated characters available.
