As our party is tending to their recent wounds, exploring the new exit into the thick brush, and looking through the coins and items within the large ogre sack, the elven mage/thief (Steven) discovers arrows, a potion, and a scroll within an old bone pile!
Two members of our party drag an ogre corpse to secure the secret door as a goblin horde arrives and begins to gain entry into the chamber. As the door yields to the goblins, the half-elven ranger (Brandon) runs one through. The door quickly yields to the masses. Goblins fall easily to our heroes as additional ranks form outside the doorway.
As the front line of goblins fall, the battle turns from melee into ranged. Spears are thrown into the room as the secret door is firmly held open by many of the fallen. Our heroes toss an explosive magic potion, and lower-level spells along with arrows, and spears are sent in retaliation. As our heroes find this method somewhat less effective, they reengage in melee to deliver a final blow to the goblins.
Then the goblin captain and his personal guards appear! Armed with heavy bows and better armor, they require higher-level spells to hold them fast. However, not all are affected as their experience and skills exceed that of the average goblin. Then, as the tide seems to turn in favor of our heroes again, a critical hit (d20) by the remaining guard scores on the ranger and followed by a perfect head shot ends the heroes reign (see pic above).
Just as our hero is falling, a horde of hobgoblins enters the room (see pic above). Called as reinforcements by the goblins, the battle rages once again! However, a new hero emerges (Jeremy) and suprises the goblin captain and quickly sides with our heroes! As one hero falls, another emerges. With only one healing spell remaining, our wounded and tired heroes call upon the magic users to unleash their most deadly spell, the sleep spell. It takes (3) three sleep spells, and several more rounds of combat to dispatch the horde of hobgoblins. Our heroes prevail!
They gather up all the treasure they can hold, extra weapons and armor, they grab the large ogre sack and stuff it full. Head back to the keep they say, and off they go. On their way they encounter a goblin patrol, which they easily dispatch. They are assaulted by a hungry pack of wolves, and a large group of skeletons in the evening. Taking additional damage and exhausting more resources our heroes put additional distance between them and the Caves of Chaos.
This is where we will begin, half way to the keep, but not out of harms way as they still remain outside the safe high walls of the Keep. Hope to see you all next Thursday!
