Announcing a new Meetup for The Wasatch Artists Meetup Group!
What: Photography with Friends
When: September 19, 2009 5:00 PM
Some Mysterious Venue Inherently Perfect for Our Needs
Haven't Quite Found It Yet
Salt Lake City, UT 84106
Here is the current plan for our new Meetup-- and this time, let's focus on photography. (No pun intended.)
I suggest that we all bring something to share-- either a favorite example of someone else's photography, or up to 30 or so of our favorite photographs that we've taken ourselves (or even have a CD of images we can look at as a slideshow on my laptop), for those who might like to gain feedback from other artists on which might be the best to include in presentation portfolios and why.
I also suggest bringing our cameras and having a "just for fun" random portrait shoot, where each photography enthusiast will shoot a portrait of one other photography enthusiast. As lighting is a pretty crucial element I thought we could spend some time experimenting with that a little bit, using diffusers (or not), colored light, reflected light, etc. We would have more freedom to do this at my house than the coffee shop, so I'm currently still considering the best location.
If anyone has ideas for, or would like to offer, a different location please feel free to do so any time up until September 5th, when I will need to start pinning down our plans.
I don't expect any masterpieces, but it may be fun and also good practice if, like me, you've spent most of your time photographing landscapes and leaves instead of human beings. Also I may need have everyone sign a modelling release before we start taking pictures, just to cover our legal extremities, but I will look into that to be sure.
(If there is an outcry against photographing each other, I'll quietly renege the idea, or we could collectively hire a model. But I thought this might be more fun.)
If we do have this at my house or another private location, I plan to bring a few different types of (probably vegetarian) snacks, and you would also all be welcome to bring something to share.
As some of you know from the last Meetup I do love books, and photography books are no exception. Some books I will have on hand for those interested include: the Photographer's Market, which is an invaluable reference if you're looking to get into galleries or published in magazines; the Magic of Digital Nature photography; Chasing the Light by Jim Brandenburg; The Step-by-Step Guide to Photographing Your Artwork (including sculpture), and various other books if anyone is interested in looking at those for fun, ideas, or reference.
I live in South Salt Lake and will update everyone on the attending list with an address if I do end up hosting this Meetup at at my house.
Please chime in with suggestions, criticisms, witticisms, and the like!
