Doin' the big, Fig Newton Canyon

BBT - Kanan Dume (map)

Selected By: Larry

It sure did get hot again, didn't it? Let's beat the heat with a refreshing Newton Canyon hike! Beginning off Kanan Rd in Malibu, we'll avail ourselves of coastal breezes, oak tree shade, and ocean views to stay cool while others swelter.

From the Kanan Rd trailhead, we'll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over to Zuma Ridge Trail. Along the way, we'll see how strong Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls are flowing this time of year; we'll make a return trip in late winter, after the rains, to compare. On the ridge, we'll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific.

Since streams flow through the canyon, there's an abundance of wildlife and plant growth. That plant growth includes poison oak, but this time of year it's turning both a beautiful and easy to spot shade of bright red.

This is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles, with 1000' total elevation gain.

Directions:

From the 101, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right.

From Pacific Coast Highway, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel.

Hi Laurie, I'm wondering if you can give me an estimate as to how long this hike will take. I just need to be sure that I have plenty of time to get my daughter from school. Thanks so much. It sounds like a great hike!

Danamarie, I'm working out some car issues and am going to have to ride my Harley over there.

Danamarie, I'd rather you drive this time if that's okay. Meet at the Park N Ride at Erringer and the 118 at 8:10?

It's southwest of the 118, between the ramp and the freeway (across the street from the Motel 6 on Erringer).

Well, when I say we're going to beat the heat, we BEAT the heat, huh? Even heavy mist and killer bees couldn't dampen (get it?) the good time and good workout we had. It was great to meet some Blazers and friends for the first time.
