Palisades Interstate Park Peanut Loop Cascade and Ruins Moderate Hike

This week's hike brings us to a moderate trail in Palisades Interstate Park (Alpine, NJ) on Sun, Jan 30. The hike is 5 miles. Dogs are allowed on a leash. The hike goes by splendid river vistas on the way down to one of the prettiest spots in the park. The hike passes cascades of a waterfall and the ruins of an Italian Garden, built about 1900 by the sculptress Mary Lawrence-Tonetti.

For those coming, I suggest wearing layers of long sleeve shirts. Also, it's recommended to bring a backpack, 2 liters of water, chapstick, gloves, and a small trail sandwich.

We'll meet at 11 AM inside the State Line Lookout/Lookout Inn. Driving directions and public transportation are below. I estimate the hike will take three hours.

Please comment if you can make it.

If anyone wants to carpool, I'll be coming from East Rutherford, NJ (I live right across the street from the Rutherford Train Station) and would be willing to drive a little out of the way to carpool.

I really enjoyed seeing the views of the cliffs, the Women's Federation Monument "castle," the fence between the border of NY and NJ, and the beautiful waterfall on the hike!

As I mentioned to some people, I'm trying to plan a Valentine's Day Weekend Sun, Feb 13 Wine and Chocolate Hike & Winery visit. Please take the time to help me build this hike by commenting on the discussion that can be found at http://www.meetup.com/Westchester-County-Beginner-Hikers/messages/boards/thread/10377578

Laura -- The trail is only a little bit steep in one spot. I would consider it a moderate hike.

April -- I do not know definitely, but I would guess that the trail has snow that has been packed down. I say this because the trails we will be using are very popular. In addition, I know that earlier that morning, there will be a group hike sponsored by the Palisades that will be going to the cascades and ruins of the Italian garden. However, their hike will not be going to the Women's Federation Monument "castle." Therefore, the trails should be pretty packed down.

Michael, would you happen to know if the trail has snow that's been packed down or if we'll be walking in possible deep snow...because I don't have the proper gear for deep snow at the moment...(or any snowy hike for that matter, but I would make do)

Driving Directions from NY via Tappan Zee Bridge:
After crossing the bridge into NJ, take exit 10 for US-9W Nyack/So Nyack. After taking the exit for 1/2 mile, turn slight left onto US-9W S/Hillside Ave. After 9 miles, turn left onto Alpine Approach Rd. Turn slight left to merge onto Palisades Interstate Pkwy North. Take Palisades Interstate Pkwy for 1.8 miles and then turn right at a sign for the State Line Lookout. Follow the road for about 3/4 mile until it ends at a large parking lot.

Jessica -- If you have the ability to put in coordinates, putting in[masked],[masked] (N[masked] W[masked]) would be best. If not, I have a Garmin and I put in the city as Alpine, NJ and the address as State Line Lookout and it brought me right to the place.
