"The Beat of Life" by Barbara Probst Solomon. The politics were maybe a little reactionary, but it gave me a sense of what it was like to live in New York in the late 50's.
"Madame Bovary," "The Golden Notebook," and "Sister Carrie" -- favorites "The History of Love" by Nicole Krauss -- phony and pretentious
E.L. Konigsburg, especially "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"
I was trained as an English teacher and love sitting around with a group of people talking about a novel, something I don't get to do with the education students I work with now.
