Iran: Internal and external crises

It is timely to consider the relation of the Iranian regime with its own people and with the West:

* The upheavals following the disputed re-election of President Ahmadinejad indicate profound dissatisfaction with the regime among broad sections of the population.

* The Obama administration has provided a September 2009 deadline for the regime to come to the table concerning its nuclear program.

I recently read an excellent book on the Iranian regime: The Persian Night, by Amir Tehari. You are invited, but not required, to peruse this work prior to the meeting. I found it very well written and very moving. If you know of any other good books or articles on Iran please inform the group by posting a comment.

As always...

All views and political orientations are welcome.

We welcome beginners and policy wonks alike. Feel free to join the discussion or just to listen and learn. Attendance is limited to 14 max as we are meeting in an eatery where it is not possible to reserve space. If you sign up and change your mind, please change your reply so that someone else may attend.

Meetup to last 1.5 hours (until 5:30 PM) although, of course, people are welcome to continue beyond that point.

Looking forward to another stimulating discussion!

This was perhaps the best disucssion group gathering we have had yet (and we've had soem good ones). Very diverse opinions on Iran, and lively debates about soem of the thoughts people had. Also, had a couple of new people who brought fresh information and ideas, and were a great addition to the group.

I very much enjoyed the conversation. John was a good moderator, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the participants thoughtful. There was also a nice mix of opinions from differing parts of the political spectrum, and a few participants with personal experience in the Middle East.

An engaging discussion, as witnessed by our running an hour past the official end of the meeting. Diverse opinions and insights shared in a spirit of mutual respect.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
