Healthcare around the world

Healthcare is currently a hot, and a controversial, topic in the U.S. How are other countries addressing this issue, and can any lessons be applied to the U.S.?

One of our members, Bruce, a neurologist, has agreed to lead the discussion. He recommends the following book (which you are invited, but not required, to read): The Healing of America, by T.R. Reid.

If you know of other resources on healthcare around the world and in the U.S. please post them on this site.

If you have had healthcare experiences in other countries, or have insights into the U.S. healthcare system, please come and share your perceptions.

As always...

All views and political orientations are welcome.

We welcome beginners and policy wonks alike. Feel free to join the discussion or just to listen and learn. Attendance is limited to 14 max as we are meeting in an eatery where it is not possible to reserve space. If you sign up and change your mind, please change your reply so that someone else may attend.

Meetup to last 1.5 hours (until 5:30 PM) although, of course, people are welcome to continue beyond that point.

Looking forward to another stimulating discussion!

An intense and illuminating discussion. Thanks are due to Bruce, who led the discussion and provided an informative introduction. While we did not reach a consensus concerning health care reform, we did agree that exchanges among people with disparate views is a great way to enhance our understanding of the issues.

a bit smaller turnout than usual, probably due to the close holidays, but an interesting discussion as usual - it's really great that we aren't all of the same mindset and opinion, and can have challenging and rewarding discussions from the differing view points. Glad there are new members adding to the mix as well!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
