What is this 'Sola' thing?

It is an all day race (excuse my language) through Zurich (and surroundings) run in relay teams from 0730 in the morning to late afternoon. It is an event organised by Zurich University with hundreds of runners (around 900 teams). It is great way to benchmark yourself against younger and fitter peers and see just how old and slow you have become.

We have two teams of Hashers which are now full. Sorry if you wanted to join that event (please let us know anyway in case someone drops out). The event finish is Irchel Park. There we wait and cheer the last hashers in and have the circle.

Who is running the 'Sola'?

Latest list of runner can be found here.

What if I'm sensible and am not part of a Sola team? Is there a normal hash?

There is! There will be hash trial laid for you and those who r*n their part of the Sola in the morning and still want more. Saddam will hare: the start is Saddam / Count Flashula's place at 14:00 (Balea / Bourne). This will be an easy A to A run then we will transport tents and beer to our spot by the lake near the finish at Irchel.

Sola Runners info - Getting there in time, finishing the run and the party:

First a public service announcement: If you are on a team and don't know your start time and location at least a week before - find out now. Don't fuck-up and make sure you are there in plenty of time (even Swiss trams/buses are late), it could be we actually have some fast runners who get their on time. It is better you wait for them than they wait for you. There is a pond in Irchel park which you'll get thrown in if your hand over is waiting for you and not the other way around.

The race starts with a ladies stretch 1 at 7:30 in the misty Hönggerberg woods. Then runners 2 to 7 head out into Engstringen, up and along the Uetliberg and back into town, finishing at the beautiful University Irchel. The afternoon runners 8-12 start at 12:30. The trail heads through Forch to Egg and comes back to Witikon. 2 short runs from there to the finish at Irchel complete the race. This is the complete route. We meet at tents across the lake from the finish (see the picture for the view from our beer stop).

Runners hand over to the next runners - AGAIN - so it's important to turn up early.

Time measurement is by chips on your run numbers. These only work for your run, so don't swap or copy them.

Complete details are on the Sola website (in German) and here is a rough guide in English. Ask Saddam for further introductions / explanations.

All sounds rather complicated? Don't worry even students manage it.

The most important bit: We are putting up a beer tent by the pond, opposite the finish you see on the picture above. We plan to be up and running by 17:00, after the afternoon hash. HELPERS WELCOME. We will go and cheer/jeer the last runners in.

ON AFTER PARTY: at Dr. Nob's place Berninastrasse 56 in Oerlikon.  Just a short ride from Irchel to Berninaplatz or a pleasant walk down Schaffhauserstrasse.  Some snacks and drinks will be provided, but It would be great if you can bring some things as well.  Phil Sencil is on the mailbox but the doorbell might still have Bührer....unless I can find one of those tiny screwdrivers :-)  [masked]      [masked]

Hi all, There are a few lost property items here. Unlike my dear friend Swans, I tend to wear men's clothes so these tee shirt and scarves will hopefully be finding there way back to their rightful female owners ;-)

HHHi all, I was signed up for leg 5 of the relay via w*rk (14k starting at 9:45). Unfortunately, I now have to travel that weekend and I have to bail. Does anyone want my place in the race? if no one takes it, my entire team will be disqualified. Let me know!!!

Hi all, if you didn't get an email from Georgina, we filled the spots. However, we expect people to drop out from illness or injury. Let me know if you're willing to be a backup runner.

  • Maggie

    Hi everyone,

I've updated the above information. The link to the list of runners was from last year. We still only have enough hashers to make one team. Pat-- I've also replaced your contact info with mine. Feel free to put it back there if you need to. Also, Wet Down There feel free to add yours.

    January 27, 2014

    • claudia

I am happy to do the same section as last year (3- up uetliberg) and Jane is in too.

      January 27, 2014

    • Rachel W

Have changed my rsvp to include Chris, if possible.

      January 27, 2014

  • 00Semen

    Hey wet down there,

Sorry for the confusion. I didn't see myself on either of the two teams you have put together on the website so I committed to join a team of non hashers. If you still need a runner I'm more than happy to run two legs. I.e participate on two teams. Just let me know. Would appreciate a shorter stretch. 10k or so max.

    Best,
    00Semen
