Photo Walk Theme

Spring Baby Birds, Waterfowl & Migrating birds. Rapperswil Wurmsbach and Busskirch Nature Reserves.

Plenty of waterfowl can be observed at the Wurmsbach and Busskirch nature reserves just minutes from the Rapperswil train station. In 2001 they built the Kiesinsel (Gravel Island) in the lake/river just off the shore from Rapperswil. It is a unique, natural breeding ground for the Black headed gull and 57 different species of just WATER birds in that area. It is so unique that it made the news, local and abroad. The following article is from May 30, 2006.

Rapperswil has about 200 species of birds. The babies will begin to hatch mid to late May. This is a great opportunity to learn how to take photos of birds in flight and see some amazing, new, cute baby chicks. I have been there on May 13th, 2011. Wow! So many babies. So cute :)

I discovered that our feathered friends are coming home! yep that is right .... as i am writing this the migrating birds are fluttering their way all through Africa from the tip of Cape Horn all the way to the top of Europe and stopping in their homes along the way. Lots of them have already arrived. Sightings have been reported ALL OVER ITALY. They started to arrive in Switzerland recently. The Cuckoos, the bee eaters, the white storks, the swifts and the swallows are ready to be captured on camera.

For people who want to take other types of photos Rapperswil has a nice old town. There is a Kloster and a Castle too.  But these areas will not be officially part of this Photo Walk.

Ticket suggestion: Get a ZVV 9Uhr Pass (day card). The 9Uhr Pass gets you all ZVV zones in Kanton Zurich for CHF 12.50 (with the 1/2 Fare Card) for the whole day.  The 9Uhr pass will get you to Rapperswil and back to Zurich with either train or boat.

09:00 meet under the hanging angel near the ticket booths in the Zurich HB - with your train ticket for the day

09:15 walk to platforms 43/44

09:25 depart Zürich HB; S5, Direction: Pfäffikon SZ

10:01 arrive Rapperswil station

10:15 walk and arrive at Rapperswil lakeside

I suggest to take the boat back to Zürich, Bürkliplatz. Boats are including in the ZVV 9Uhr Pass.  Boats are part of the regular ZVV zone system. The 9Uhr Pass gets you all ZVV zones in Kanton Zurich for CHF 12.50 (with the 1/2 Fare Card) for the whole day. The 9Uhr Pass will get you to Rapperswil and back to Zurich on either the trains or boats.

*19:48 depart Rapperswil SG, Schiffstation

21:55 arrive Zürich Bürkliplatz, Schiffstation

*it is also possible to take the boat back from Rapperswil at 16:30, arriving at Bürkliplatz, Schiffstation at 18:15. However, that might be too early for our day plan.  Anyone can leave when they need to and take any train from Rapperswil back to Zurich.

This is just a general idea.  Not written in stone.  People can leave when they like, eat lunch when they like, walk where and when they like.  But it is good to have a guideline.

10:15 - 12:15 Walk over the bridges which hover over the birds and some of their nests near the Kiesinsel (gravel island). You might want to bring a tripod and/or binnoculars.

12:15 - 13:00  lunch break near lake side - bring a packed lunch and water

13:00 - 18:15 walk along lakeside to Schmerikon, Bahnhof, passing more birds and nests. From Rapperswil to Schmerikon is 12km.  We do not need to walk the whole way. We'll see how we are getting on with time and photo stops. People can also leave when they like and head back to Rapperswil. Here is the route.

18:18 - 19:18 trains from Schmerikon to Rapperswil leave 18 and 49 pass the hour.

Schmerikon bahnhof to Rapperswil bahnhof takes 15 mins. Latest train would be 19:18 to make boat connection in Rapperswil 19:48.

19:48 Take the boat.  Depart Rapperswil SG, Schiffstation
21:55 arrive Zürich Bürkliplatz, Schiffstation

Take the train. Rapperswil Bahnhof to Zurich HB is about 35 minutes.

    Hello Everybody!

Many thanks for a great day yesterday. Even though the weather was not very generous to us and the birds were still hiding a bit, I enjoyed the day very much. I just uploaded the group pictures taken during the day plus a few other including birds’ hunting shots. If you’re interested to see more please visit

Look forward to seeing you soon at the next photo event. Best,

it was canceled and rescheduled a few minutes later. we decided not to go because of the rain and then changed our minds again a few minutes later. but... if you stayed in bed and had a relaxing day at home, well you also had a great day, it was cold and the baby birds did not hatch yet, was not as great as the description said. maybe in a few more days or a week it will be wonderful. Go when it is sunny. It was very cold today.

    Good morning,
Will the meetup take place? I'm coming from Basel and have to take the train and leave in about 15 minutes, so would be grateful for an update if it rains on ZH or not? Thanks!
