Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

Hi everybody!

NOTE THE TIME CHANGE IS ONE HOUR LATER, now 3PM!!!!

Since there was such a high demand (26 showing up, 6 waitlisted) I've decided to change the location so that everyone has a chance to go, so we'll just wait a few minutes for people to show up and Yoga to end (ends generally at 3), and then we can go in the very huge courtyard there, get into different groups, and then enjoy the beautiful day and talk Vonnegut.  There are a bunch of little areas at the base of Runyon where groups of people can congregate, so we don't have to have the groups right next to each other.  Parking is free and available all over, but you might have to park a block or two away and walk up.  There are two entrances to Runyon, and we'll be meeting by the FULLER or EAST entrance.

Afterwards, if people wanted to hike, there's that option too, or plenty of food options right around if a few want to grab coffee and food.  What I would do is bring a blanket or towel to sit on, and we'll just find spots, sit in a circle, and go from there.  I'm hitting up Costco at some point this week, so maybe I'll bring juice boxes and snack bags so we can feel like we're in fifth grade baseball/softball having post-game treats.  Feel free to bring whatever.

From now on, I talked to my local library which is a few minutes from Aroma/Runyon area, and they have an awesome and big room that accomodate like 40 or 50 people, so future meetups will probably be held there.

ALSO, PLEASE UPDATE YOUR STATUS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO GO, OR IF YOU CAN NOW GO!!!

Look forward to seeing you there- the book is great!

So most of you have probably read Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse V, and this is another famous one of his that I've just never gotten around to reading.  So I figure why not start the club with something easy like this.  Even if you've read it already, just scan through it and come to the discussion anyway.

I was going to put a description on here, but figured eh.  So get the book on Amazon (you should probably have this in your collection), or put it on your nook, or go check it out from the library.

Ooh, I really want to come to this; I even read the book (finished it yesterday). But that weekend my husband and I are going out of town. Any chance this group will read another Vonnegut book anytime soon? The anthology is calling my name...

Are we all gonna fit in this place?

I think we'll be fine- I'm going to cap it right now as is, and then the week before I'm going to tell people to reevaluate wether or not they can make the meeting. My guess is that 20 will end up showing up, in which case Aroma can handle it as they have a ton of space both inside and outside.

Hey Eliot, I don't think there will be a big discrepancy between editions of the book, so whatever copy you get should be just fine. My copy is just the stock Amazon paperback one, it's got a blue cover. Chapters are short enough (mostly one to two pages) so that you won't really need a page number if you want to quote a section.

And everyone else that has joined, I'm excited to see you all!

Is there any consensus at all on the version of the book? If I quote something, I'd like there to be repeatedly results. I'm curious if anybody has the book and what version/publication/period it comes from so that I may purchase/borrow the same one.

I can't be at the meet up but I'll still read the book, I've heard about it but have not read it.

Yeah so ideally we'll have all finished the book, and then we'll get started basically with a conversation about our various reactions and thoughts, and if need be I'll have some ideas or an activity we could also do to liven things up. But for the most part our response to the books will just fuel an awesome discussion.

Also, what's the format of discussion or is it an open-end fill your own plate sort of soiree?

    April 20, 2013

  • Eliot N.

Looks fun. Are we required to have finished the book?
