September 29 Discussion- ALL THE PRETTY HORSES by Cormac McCarthy

Hi all!

So the poll was tied Thursday night between John Fowles' The Magus and Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses- each with 11 votes.  Since a few people commented worried that the Magus' 650 pages would be a bit much to handle in one month, I'm going to give the tie breaker to All the Pretty Horses, since it's much more doable for members with busier schedules.  Plus All the Pretty Horses is also the winner of the National Book Award- so it is sure to be an incredible read!

So that being said, get the book by whatever means possible and let's have an amazing discussion, led be the awesome and always in attendance Tim!  Cormac McCarthy is a pretty famous American author- you may have heard of some of his other works like The Road... or thanks to the Coen Brothers: No Country for Old Men.

There is also a film adaptation of this staring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz- so if anyone owns it maybe it'd be great to coordinate a movie night for the group AFTER people have read it... but before the discussion so you can add a little something!  If you have the movie or would be up for something like that, use the comment section to coordinate!

Hope to see you all on September 29th!

___________________________

Hi all- I hope Sunday's discussion was great! Huge thanks to Sarah R. for hosting what was sure to be an excellent discussion. I was in Chicago, so my apologies for missing... but I'm sure to make the next one as I'll FINALLY be free for a weekend! Tim volunteered to host this meetup, and sent me his book choices, so please go to the poll page (under the 'more' section), and vote on the book you'd like to read next. I'll leave the poll open for a few days before closing it. Looks like he's got some pretty great selections, so this next Meetup is sure to be great.

So go vote and then have an awesome week, and I hope to see you all September 29th!

So I'm some kind of genius and put the wrong time on my calendar. I arrived well after dark and was amazed at how terrible the parking situation was. And how closed the cafe was. And how dumb of a mistake I had made. If anyone else couldn't make it and would like to discuss the book let me know. In any case, looking forward to next month.

    Hi everyone,

See you all in a few at the trails cafe. Look for the group with the books on the table. If we're not at the tables, we're probably on the opposite side of the road on the grass.

Sorry was really excited to come, I read the book and loved it, but the location is way to far away for me as I live in Santa Monica ;) enjoy the meeting today

I have tickets to see a show tomorrow! Still, I'm glad I was motivated to read a book I wouldn't have normally read, and I loved it! I'm looking forward to next month!

I love Cormac McCarthy! This will give me a great reason to finally check out All The Pretty Horses!

“They heard somewhere in that tenantless night a bell that tolled and ceased where no bell was and they rode out on the round dais of the earth which alone was dark and no light to it and which carried their figures and bore them up into the swarming stars so that they rode not under but among them and they rode at once jaunty and circumspect, like thieves newly loosed in that dark electric, like young thieves in a glowing orchard, loosely jacketed against the cold and ten thousand worlds for the choosing.”

Great to see that so many people have signed up. Looking forward to chatting with everyone.

Hey group, I just realized that 2 of the books in this month's poll are over 650 pages long. Although the books all sound really good, that seems like a lot to read before our next meeting. I'm totally game if you guys are (if the longer books win the vote) but I figured I would just put this out there. Thoughts?

I like Stephanie's idea. If the two longer ones win the poll we can potentially set a chapter marker for a first discussion and one month later a second one for the whole book. Would be rather interesting to see if second half of the book unravels the way people think it will. For me personally it's an incentive to make a commitment to great but intimidating voluminous books.

Hi everyone -- I'm fine with either idea (choosing the shorter book, or spanning the longer one out over two meetings). Brock, as the leader of our esteemed group, which one do you prefer?

    Hi Tim...or Brock!
Just wanted to know when you guys will be closing the poll :)

    August 22, 2013

I'll be closing the poll probably at the end of the day

I'll be out of town, can't wait for the next one though
