Shoot the ice climbers in Johnson Canyon

I've been here before and if the weather is good, this is a nice way to spend the day. Lots of beautiful scenery.

Is there any special walking gear that we need to get to the photo shoot? e.g. crampons, walking sticks etc. How far up the path is it?

    February 10, 2014

    • Ian

crampons would be a little extreme, but they would work,Something less heavy duty like these from MEC are good, trekking poles are always a good idea. If you really speed along it would take less than 2 hours, but i would double that to 4 when taking a camera. food water would be a very good idea...

Karen, I've been there several times. It is a slow scenic walk to the top with lots of photographic opportunities. Almost anyone can walk it and I would guess it's about an hour or so. I will be wearing my ice cleats. I would suggest you dress warm, take some hand warmers to keep your fingers thawed and pack a lunch.

I have been wanting to do a ice climbing shoot all winter, sounds great as long as the weather warms up a bit more....-24 in airdrie this morning

It's -32 degrees West of Cochrane this morning and my fingers don't work at these temperatures. Hopefully it will warm up....

Unless we get a warm spell in February, I'll be waiting until March anyway. It's quite a walk to top if it's very cold weather.

    February 4, 2014

  • Ian

someone should step up and run with this one. my February is booked, the earliest I can see myself picking a date is the second or third weekend in march., and I'm not going to book something that far out...

    February 3, 2014

  • Warren

    February 2, 2014

    • Ian

yes we could stop at other falls, i dont of any between here and there. If you know of any, speak up and we can work on a schedule...

there are some small ones near the road that'll look cool in feb. also have wanted to see Numa falls in winter and the area. It would be great to go somewhere with winter sun.

Johnston canyon is a good place to go. When we went last year there were several climbers at the falls.Pick a date for this one Dan, that works for you, I will almost certainly join you if the date is free for me..The climbers get there early and therefore are gone before the large crowds, i would suggest getting there early, a meeting place could be the petro can again, or the a&w in cochrane, we could travel out on 1a and catch up with you there somewhere. Or we could have several meeting spots, where we carpool up and go to the next one. For instance crowfoot lrt. petro can, Tim's in canmore.
I will help you set this one up,just pick a date and time..
