Winter Solstice Ski Trip

This will be an alternate trip to celebrate the Winter Solstice instead of sleeping on the top of Flattop. We'll ski back to Williwaw Lakes, which is about 12 miles RT. This is an easy trip, suitable for beginning backcountry skiers (touring style). It's a great way to start building up those ski muscles for longer trips.

Bring lunch, water, appropriate gear for the weather conditions and, as usual, lots of good cheer! Bring extra layers as it sometimes gets pretty windy and chilly in the valley the closer we get to the lakes. We should get back to the trailhead before dark, but it's always a good idea to pack a headlamp.

As usual, per club policy, no dogs are allowed.

Karlene with a K - I'm glad you could join us! I'm sure we'll see you again on a future trip. P.S. Thanks to whomever it was who left the Ghiradelli chocolate squares on my windshield. It was much appreciated. I even shared one with John.

Perfect trip to celebrate winter solstice in the outdoors. This was my first meetup with this group and I had a blast. Thanks for the leadership and group safety, couldn't have done it without the delicious baked goods either.

Challenging for me (I can't feel my legs) but a most enjoyable trip. It was a really good work-out. I lagged behind and appreciated folks keeping me in their sights and not leaving me to the wolves.

Lynda - I'm glad you joined us. Backcountry ski touring does provide a good workout! We don't mind staying back with the folks who are a little slower as we have all been there (i.e. just starting out or recuperating from injuries) and we don't like leaving people behind. Hope to see you again!

Thanks so much, Amy. I'm really glad I went. I loved the workout and love long trips like this. It was my first outing this season, so I'm looking forward to many more and getting stronger (and faster)!

The weather got a little blustery, but that's to be expected back in that area. It was a good "shakedown" trip with fun people and we learned that Chas is a powerful trailbreaker with great technique. It was a fun way to celebrate the Solstice and I'm sure glad Carlene could join us. :-)

What a great outing! It was awesome to spend the afternoon getting the ol' legs back in touring mode. Thanks to all of you for sharing those tasty treats! It was definitely worth the drive in from Palmer!

Thanks everyone! Great to see some new faces and find some new trail breaking buddies. Thanks for the home baked goodies Amy.

Woke up to realize that my skis were still at Ski AK - which doesn't open until ten. I apologize for not un-RSVPing. Hope you all had a great ski.

If the freezing rain falls tonight, check this site for possible changes due to road or snow conditions.
